When it comes to paying tribute to Heinrich Schutz's compositional achievement, in his art his treatment of the text and language must be mentioned first. The Geistliche Chor-Music 1648, a collection of 29 motets for five to seven voices and one of his most important works, is characterized by he carefully thought-out musical realization of the meaning of the text. In his detailed foreword to the collection the composer presented these as models for composition without a basso continuo - it was his conviction that very young composer should obtain the properfoundation for a good counterpoint. Despite the strict counterpoint, stylistically speaking from an earlier era, the Musicus poeticus imbued his works with a strongly expressive character. The individual motets are structured differently and they differ - according to content - in their length and character. Short, rather straightforward pieces stand alongside long, worked-out pieces with greater expressive intensity, and cheerful, optimistic works are juxtaposed with plaintive ones. This first part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1890 and 1902. It includes functional music for use in the Catholic liturgy (Opus 61 and WoO VI/12, 19) and the Protestant liturgy (Opus 79f and WoO VI/17, which provides chorale-based four-part settings for a complete church year). Reger wrote both secular folk song settings (WoO VI/10, 11), as well as sacred (WoO VI/13, 14). His Drei Chore [Three Choruses] op. 39, very demanding both compositionally and tonally, were dedicated to renowned choral societies, almost professional in standard. Palmsonntagmorgen WoO VI/18, written as a commission, forms a bridge to Reger's later motets to a certain extent. Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a hybrid edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice.

The Complete Vocal Works Johann Pachelbel is known today as a composer of organ music and of a world-famous instrumental canon which frequently features in concert programmes and recording catalogues. However, the same can be said of only a few of his vocal compositions. At most, the motets appear occasionally in church music repertoire. Pachelbel’s arias, vocal concerti and large-scale Magnificats have received little attention up to now. Church musicians and musicologists have long wished for a critical edition of these important works, which survive in Pachelbel’s manuscript and were largely composed in his main places of work, Erfurt and Nuremberg . As always with such ventures, new discoveries are to be expected regarding the body of works, source material and the context of the works. This concerns not only beautiful music, but rather a deepening of our understanding of Pachelbel as a key figure between southern and central German traditions, and the recognition of an oeuvre which has all too often been pushed into the shadows by the mighty Bach. The Critical Edition The edition aims to make available all of Johann Pachelbel’s surviving vocal works in the best possible form. It is edited by the Institut für Musikwissenschaft at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Institut für Kirchenmusik at the Kunstuniversität Graz. Two volumes per year are planned. As a chronological order is not possible in many cases, the individual works have been arranged according to scoring within their groups. This second part-volume contains mixed choruses composed by Reger between 1904 and 1914. Most are sacred works, including the great motets op. 110 (Mein Odem ist schwach, Ach Herr, strafe mich nicht!, O Tod, wie bitter bist du), the Acht geistliche Gesange (Eight Sacred Songs) op. 138, and the fragmentary Vater unser. Functional liturgical music is represented with the Easter motet Lasset uns den Herren preisen, the Vier Kirchengesange (Four Church Songs) and the English-language Responsories. With the secular works, the Zwolf Chore aus dem Volksliederbuch (Twelve Choruses from the Volksliederbuch) form a substantial portion, flanked by Reger's setting of Good Night written for a school book, and the Abschiedslied for Fritz Stein.
In January 2008 the Max-Reger-Institut (MRI) in Karlsruhe began publishing a scholarly-critical edition of the works of Reger (RWA). As a Hybrid Edition it is exploring new approaches in editorial techniques.For the first time, in this edition the digital component for this volume will no longer be supplied on a data storage device, but published in an online portal.

This 17-minute choral sequence is scored for mixed chorus and organ, with optional percussion, and presents five of the Latin motets’which occur at the end of movements in MacMillan's St John Passion (2007): Astiterunt reges terr, Judas, mercator pessimus, Peccantem me quotidie, Crucifixus etiam pro nobis, Stabat Mater. In the last of these, MacMillan quotes Bach's Passion Chorale; Bach's original is therefore included as an optional opening movement in the sequence, to be sung in German or English. The sequence was selected by Nigel Perrin (Bath Camerata), who comments, “I chose these movements because they stand on their own and are effective as 'motets' with organ accompaniment. The order of movements forms a sort of chronological sequence. Although the keys do not relate I felt that this did not matter as each movement is completely different, creating its own sound-world and emotion. I have not added to the original settings; rather, I have removed material so that the choral construction can stand alone.†A Choral Sequence from the St John Passion represents a significant addition to the repertory of devotional works for Passiontide and is appropriate for church and concert performance alike.
