A Harpsichord is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. It produces sound by plucking a string when a key is pressed. The instrument was widely used in Renaissance and Baroque music. During the late 18th century,it gradually disappeared from the musical scene with the rise of the Piano. In the 20th century, it made a resurgence, being used in historically informed performances of older music, in new (contemporary) compositions, and inpopular culture.
This piece is perfect for anyone who wants to discover this unique instrument. Composed in 1966 by Elizabeth Maconchy the upbeat allegro of Notebook For Harpsichord takesapproximately 8 minutes to perform.

These three solo harpsichord pieces are a collection of recent compositions, each with an individual theme and idea. The first, The convertibility of Lute Strings, was first performed at the Purcell Room, London in 1992. The second, Tango for Tim was written in memory of a friend and composer Tim Souster, which was composed and first performed in 1994. The third piece, Elisabeth Gets Her Way, is an extended version of the cadenza which Elisabeth Chojnacka persuaded Michael Nyman to add to his Harpsichord Concerto, which includes material from the first two pieces in this album.

The third volume of Couperin's Pieces for Harpsichord does not contain a date of publication, however it is thought to have been composed during 1716-1717, due to the address which the composer gave on his other Harpsichordcompositions. Yet, the compilation remains a favourite. François Couperin (1668-1733) is often nicknamed 'Couperin the Great' to distinguish him from other members of the musical family. Many of the composer's works havepicturesque titles. Examples of this in his third volume of Pieces for Harpsichord include, La Langueur (Languor), Le Petit-Rien (The Little-Nothing) and L'Artiste (The Artist). Couperin's moods are expressed through choices ofkeys, adventurous harmonies and discords. With a significant amount of variation and inspiration, these Pieces for Harpsichord are essential to the repertoire of aspiring players of the instrument.

John Stanley's 30 Voluntaries - published in three collections as op. 5, 6, and 7 - are amongst the best-known organ works of the 18th century. These compositions in free style were met with great acclaim by his contemporaries. The first volume, published in 1748, immediately achieved classic status and encouraged other composers to write similar collections. The op. 5 collection is now published in an up-to-date Urtext edition by Carus, based on the first printed edition and a 1785 edition consulted for comparison. The pieces, of easy to medium difficulty, are for manuals (and can alternatively also be played on the harpsichord), and mainly comprise two movements in the sequence slow - fast. Rhythmic energy, richness of color through the use of solo registers such as cornet and trumpet, dialog between the manuals with multiple echo effects - these are the characteristics of these wonderful compositions, which are also suitable for use in worship.

â??Italian composer, Domenico Scarlatti (1685-1757) is well-known for his Keyboard compositions. His 555 Keyboard Sonatas remain ever popular to this day, and it is for this reason that this first volume is indispensable to performers of the genre. Originally composed for the Harpsichord, Organ or early Pianoforte, the Sonatas display the riveting use of discords and unconventional modulations to remote keys. It is also thought that much of Scarlatti's Keyboard music contains influences of Iberian music, considering that he spent much of his working life in the service of the Spanish and Portuguese royal families. This first volume, comprising Sonatas 1-52, includes the popular and recognised Sonatas in D minor (K. 9), E major (K. 20) and B minor (K. 27). Bearing in mind that Domenico Scarlatti was a highly competent and popular Keyboard player in his day, so much so that he was employed in the service of two royal families, his Sonatas are composed with much experience, understanding and expertise, creating an essential addition to the repertoire of all Keyboard players of the Baroque genre. â?.
