I wrote Galloping Ghosts (A Ragtime March) to conclude a concert of my chamber music in New York City on October 28, 1986. It is the final part of a work called Rags for Divers Players. This work was written to show the variety possible within the standard rag form. I used all the players available for the finale -- two violins, viola, cello, bass, flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and piano. Since this is a rather unusual instrumental combination and not easy to reassemble, I decided to rescore the work for concert band. Galloping Ghosts is written in a standard march form but incorporates many of the syncopations found in ragtime. The uniquely American music called ragtime traces its history to African rhythms brought over by slaves. Over the years this music became welded to European musical forms such as the quadrille and the march. Drums and banjos and the minstrel tradition lent a special flavor, and from all these elements ragtime slowly evolved within the largely unknown black subculture of the late 19th century. In the late 1890's it emerged as a fully developed form in the classic piano solos of Scott Joplin (1869-1917). Joplin's 1899 hit, Maple Leaf Rag, was an overnight sensation and brought ragtime worldwide fame. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 8 Flute 1 and 2, 2 Oboe, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet, 3 Bb Bass and Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 2 Bassoon 1 and 2, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Cornet 1, 3 Bb Cornet 2, 3 Bb Cornet 3, 2 Horn 1 and 2 in F, 2 Horn 3 and 4 in F, 4 Trombone 1 and 2, 4 Bass Trombone, 2 Baritone (B.C.), 2 Baritone (T.C.), 4 Tuba, 1 String Bass, 1 Timpani, 1 Xylophone, 3 Percussion 1, 3 Percussion 2.

Turn-of-the-(20th)-century music is featured in Concert in the Park. This pot-pourri of styles features waltzes, gallops, ragtime, and marches-types of music usually performed at an outdoor concert. Trumpet and clarinet solos are interspersed to pay tribute to the fine soloists of the time, such as Herbert L. Clark. An allusion to The Stars and Stripes Forever closes the work.

Audiences around the world love to hear the marches of Karl L. King, and no concert would be complete without a rousing rendition of one of his well-crafted gems. Prestissimo contains all the musical excitement that we've come to expect from this march giant and, as a result, all the good memories and fun times we associate with the circus radiates through this classic march. Equally effective at a standard march tempo, or as an up-speed circus gallop! A real toe tapper!

This three-movement programmatic work is based on various constellations and their Greek mythologies. Movements include Orion (The Hunter), Draco (The Dragon), and Pegasus (The Winged Horse). The opening movement paints a picture of the night sky before introducing the mighty Orion. The second movement depicts the fiery dragon and its fierce triple row of teeth. (An optional lion's roar enhances the movement.) The final movement takes listeners on a flight with Pegasus, beginning with a fast gallop on the ground before the magnificent animal takes flight. The movements can be performed separately or as a whole. Absolutely stunning!

The energetic activities of three craftsmen at a local crafts market inspired the composer Christian Bouthier to write this work in three movements. The clockmaker gets many curious visitors at his stand. He patiently and proudly shows the precision work of his beautiful clocks and lets all of them tick - the small ones and large ones. The cooper (barrel-maker) skillfully puts together fine-looking, sturdy barrels of the best types of wood. From afar, you can hear the cooper hammering. In the final movement things are hectic at the blacksmith because the local horse-riding society has just arrived. Many horses are provided with new shoes. The experienced blacksmith hits thehorseshoes into the proper shape on his anvil; now the horses can spiritedly trot and gallop on the way back. A fascinating new addition to the concert band repertoire.

Peter Terry's Unleashed?makes for an impressive concert opener that is the musical equivalent of unleashing a caged animal. The piece is exciting from start to finish, with energetic and bold material that students will love to play.Everyone wants to be unleashed, to be set free of restraints. This piece captures the exhilaration of being set into motion with unlimited optimism and energy. The piece is a rhythmic and propulsive gallop that spins off lyrical material as it drives to a climactic finish that is both exciting and fun. The piece opens with a robust first theme, then transitions on a rhythmic figure spun off from the opening material. The opening section repeats in variation with different orchestration. The more lyrical material that emerges should be brought out to balance the first theme and rhythmic figures from the first section. A development of the material from the opening follows, driving to a brief pause. This pause feels like it will lead to a contrasting lyrical theme, but the energy is just suspended for a second before the piece takes off again. The work finishes with a repeated-note transition back to variations on the opening material and a propulsive rush to the end. I enjoyed writing this piece and hope your students will enjoy playing these contrasting styles and that you will find the piece beneficial in teaching important musical concepts. ?????????Peter Terry, 2018.Everyone wants to be unleashed, to be set free of restraints.
