The work was first performed by John Harle (Saxophone), Julian Lloyd Webber (Cello) and the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by James Judd on 8 March 1997 at the Royal Festival Hall, London. The flute concerto 'Dances with the Winds' was composed in 1974 for the Swedish flautist Gunilla von Bohr, a specialist in all members of the flute family. The ordinary flute thus alternates with a bass flute at the beginning and end of the four-movement concerto, the second movement is assigned to the shrill piccolo and the third to the sensuous alto flute. The last movement is a summary of all the musical events in the concerto. At the end the bass flute soars to the top of its register, the note D acting as the pivot to many of the symmetries in the work, against a resigned B flat minor chord on the orchestra. French composer and teacher, Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) was a prolific composer of the 20th century as a member of 'Les Six'. His compositions remain highly regarded, Concerto for Oboe being no exception. Milhaud's compositionsare influenced by jazz and polytonality, as exemplified in Concerto for Oboe, which includes a Piano reduction accompaniment. Composed in 1957, Concerto for Oboe is an alternative, exciting concerto made up of three movements - 1)Animated, 2) With Serenity, and 3) Animated. With a typical performance lasting around 18 and a half minutes, Milhaud makes use of variation in articulation, complex rhythms, chromaticism, altering tempos, variation in dynamicsand a wide tessitura, amongst other aspects. Milhaud's Concerto for Oboe is essential to all advanced oboists seeking modern and exciting repertoire.

Her oboe concerto was used by Ursula Mamlok over the course of several decades. The first version with orchestra she wrote between 1974 and 1976, it was first performed in 2013 in Gottingen. In 1980, the composer created the second version for oboe, two piano andpercussion, which is now available here as a purchase edition; this version was premiered in 1982 at the Manhattan School of Music in New York, where Ursula Mamlok worked for a long time as a teacher, with the oboist Henry Schuman as a soloist. Finally, Mamlok wrote a third version with chamber orchestra accompaniment in 2003. The three movements played without pause still hint at the structure of the classical solo concert, and the oboe also emerges with several solo cadenzas. However, the tonal language is decidedly modern, with frequent use of multiphonics and dramatic-noisy percussion.
