If Davies's Cello Concerto has already evoked comparisons with Elgar's, that is perhaps an indication not only of its wealth of solo melody (there is hardly a page where the cello is not singing, or if not that, then dancing), and of its predominantly slow tempos, but also of its musical stature. This second Strathclyde concerto is a virtuoso piece for the entire ensemble, which is used almost throughout as a clutch of soloists rather than as a tutti block. The general tone is one of passionate but interior dialogue, especially in the opening Moderato and the slow movement; and though the finale is more extrovert, the work ends back in quietness and rumination.

Edited by Robert P. Block make it possible to play the work both on a B-flat trumpet as well as on a D instrument. The Concerto in D was published around 1715 in a collective edition that comprised six concerti and mentioned three composers' names, one of them being Giuseppe Torelli, to whom the work can be attributed unequivocally on stylistic grounds. Particularly striking is the fact that the parts of the two violins are sometimes worked out in a more virtuoso manner than that of the solo trumpet, which is only called for in the outer movements.The edition for trumpet and piano contains two solo parts, which make it possible to play the work both on a B-flat trumpet as well as on a D instrument.

Written between the autumn of 1900 and April 1901, Sergei Rachmaninoff's Concerto for Piano No. 2 remains one of the composer's most enduringly popular pieces and cemented his reputation as composer of concerti. It also served as confirmation of the end of Rachmaninoff's three-year bout with clinical depression and writer's block that stemmed, in part, from the poor reception by critics of his first symphony in 1897. Lemare's compositions are uneven in quality, but the best are still active in the repertoire. The Toccata di Concerto is certainly full of fireworks and has the capacity to show the abilities of a great Organ. The upper parts have plenty of French toccata style, but the theme in the pedals gives the piece substance, as does the romantic, chromatic interlude in the middle of the work.Organ virtuoso and composer Edwin Lemare was the world's highest-paid Organist at the height of his career in the early 1900's, drawing bravos from ctritics and the crowds who queued around the block to hear this most famous of Organists. After having served as a church Organist for a relativelyshort period, he began the life of a travelling recitalist, beginning with a hundred-recital tour of the USA and Canada in 1900, a career that continued until the stock market crash of 1929. Lemare was also virtuosic in his ability to transcribe great Orchestral works for the Organ, allowing audiences in those less urban times to hear works played live that they might have heard no other way.
