The concerto takes the historical figure of the brutal impaler Vlad Tzepesch (1431-1476) as its starting point and subsequently develops the myth into an overwrought and gruesome piece of work: 1: 'Oderint dum metuant' is a raving Allegro with a Baroque ritornello structure and modern 'Draculisms'. 2: 'Luna su Tirgoviste' is a memoriam for the thousands of impaled victims who came to a violent end in today's Targoviste. 3: 'Il ballo transilvano' confronts a naive waltz rhythm with aggressive polyrhythmic reinterpretations - in the manner of the stick and the carrot. 4: 'Bacio di sangue' is Neo-Baroque horror music which has got out of hand, demanding extreme virtuosity from both soloists and ensemble. Ensemble Violin Solo Piano Solo bring a Marimba mallet for playing inside the Piano String Orchestra (6-6-4-4-2) the number of string players may be doubled, 12-12-8-8-4 if doubling the strings then Desk 1 means Desk 1+2, Desk 2 means 3+4 etc. Performance Notes General: The set-up on stage is important, with two Violin groups on each side on the platform: Vilin 1 lefts and Violin 2 right, as seen from the audience 1st Movement : In bar 1 &, 7 the entire string group should adjust their intonation to the Double Basses and their natural harmonics. In the rest of the movement normalintonation should be used. The slow and rhythmical vibrato pulse should follow the accents 2nd Movement : The 10/5 meter is divided into two beats, and the dotted lines show the position of the second beat in each bar 3rd Movement : no comment 4th Movement : The very high harmonics are intended as mostly a high 'airy' sound. The small gliss/portamenti that will invariably occur in the fast shofts of positions are intended.

Maslanka's wind ensemble writing is highly prized among college and university bands. One young fan asked if Maslanka had ever written a clarinet concerto. No one has asked, said he. I'm asking, said she, and Desert Roads for clarinet and wind ensemble was underway. Since its premiere in 2005 (Margaret Dees, clarinet, and Dallas Wind Symphony), Desert Roads has been programmed by many major university wind ensembles, and has been recorded by the Illinois State University Wind Ensemble (Stephen Steele, cond.). A thorough discussion of the work became a doctoral thesis by Joshua Mietz. We now present the work in piano reduction.

Composed for violinist Baird Dodge in 1995-97, SLEEP is a 25-minute concerto in three movements. Thefirst movement (Twitching) is dramatic in character, full of contrasts, pitting the violin against the orchestra in more or less romantic fashion. The second (Breathing) is comprised of overlapping layers of simple harmonies accompanying a freely evolving, lyrical melody in the violin. In the third movement (Sweating), the soloist and ensemble initially work together to create a rising line. They soon diverge, and an increasing layering of multiple lines throughout the ensemble leads to a very high point of density which is then abruptly cut off by the virtuosic frenzy in the violin which ends the work.
