The first movement exudes an urgency scored in the rhythms and harmonies throughout, while the second movement, Elegy, reflects on the memory of a friend. The flute concerto 'Dances with the Winds' was composed in 1974 for the Swedish flautist Gunilla von Bohr, a specialist in all members of the flute family. The ordinary flute thus alternates with a bass flute at the beginning and end of the four-movement concerto, the second movement is assigned to the shrill piccolo and the third to the sensuous alto flute. The last movement is a summary of all the musical events in the concerto. At the end the bass flute soars to the top of its register, the note D acting as the pivot to many of the symmetries in the work, against a resigned B flat minor chord on the orchestra. (Einojuhani Rautavaara) CD: Patrick Gallois (flute), Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, cond. Leif Segerstam ODE 921-2World premiere: Stockholm, May 4, 1974 Additional to the original scoring for flute, piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute, the flute part in the piano reduction contains ossias for alto flute instead of the bass flute.

THE BONES OF MR. FORTUNE (FREE AT LAST!) is an 11-minute concerto-like work for solo flute accompanied by symphonic winds and percussion – perfect to play with band or with orchestra, as well as with the composer’s own piano reduction. The work features lengthy cadenzas, and exhilarating dance-like sections with the ensemble. Hailstork describes the historical inspiration: Abused in life and death, an enslaved man (Mr. Fortune) was owned by a surgeon who preserved his skeleton to study anatomy. The bones remained with the doctor’s family for generations, and were given a proper burial making national news in 2013, 215 years after Mr. Fortune’s death.Abused in life and death, an enslaved man known as Mr. Fortune was honored with an elaborate funeral more than 200 years after he died in Connecticut.Mr. Fortune was owned by Dr. Preserved Porter on a farm in Waterbury, Connecticut. When Fortune died in 1798, Porter, a bone surgeon, preserved his skeleton by having the bones boiled to study anatomy at a time when cadavers for medical study were disproportionately taken from slaves, servants and prisoners. One of Porter’s descendants gave the skeleton in 1933 to Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, where it was displayed from the 1940s until 1970. The descendant referred to the slave as “Larry†and his name was forgotten at the time.A study by forensic anthropologists at the Quinnipiac University School of Medicine concluded that Fortune was about 5 feet 5 inches tall and died at around 55 years old. He suffered a number of painful ailments, including a fracture in his left hand, a severe ankle sprain and lower back pain. “He was an individual who was in considerable distress,†a forensic professor, Richard Gonzalez said.I was taken by the bizarre story of Mr. Fortune and decided to use it as the stimulus for this work.

If there was ever a composer in the modern era from whom instrumentalists would hanker for a sonata or concerto, Richard Strauss must be right up there. His wide-ranging orchestral and operatic creations bleed with gloriously idiomatic writing for every instrument, and yet only the piano, violin, clarinet (in tandem with the bassoon), oboe and horn can really claim to have bespoke solo works from the composer's seamlessly productive pen, and collectively they form only a small proportion of the composer's output. No mere transcription, this three-movement Sonata after Richard Strauss extends well beyond a redeployment of the composer's music to fit a new idiom, filling the gaping chasm of 'serious' late-Romantic recital material for trumpet players, to be performed in toto or as Drei Konzertstücke. Thomas Oehler and Jonathan Freeman-Attwood have drawn on a wide range of Strauss's works to create the new offering, including the Violin Sonata, Von den Hinterweltlern (Also sprach Zarathustra), the Serenade for Winds ('From an invalid's workshop') and Zerbinetta's Aria (Ariadne auf Naxos).
