Confluence was commissioned by the Organ Artist Series of Pittsburgh in celebration of its twentieth anniversary in 1999. Christa Rakich gave the premier at the closing concert of the season at Calvary Episcopal Church by in April of 1999. It has been performed frequently since that time. The title was given to honor the joining together or confluence of the three rivers of Pittsburgh: the Allegheny, the Monongalela, and the Ohio. Confluence is a curious hybrid related to both the sonata and rondo forms. It is of the ABABA design with the final A quite extended by polyphonic games and a very noisy and triumphant epilogue. The first idea is driving, rhythmic, nervous and agitated. The second is quiet, gentle and pastoral, that slowly moves in its mysterious ways, closing with a plaintive row of a dozen different pitches. The composer delights in the challenge of making tone rows as approachable and sing-able as possible. Both ideas make slightly varied restatements. At the end, fugal exploitation of the first idea is followed by that row, entering with stentorian grandeur in full pedal, heralding the triumphant close. This row, like the month of March is referred to frequently as coming in like a Iamb, going out like a lion.

Confluence conveys the majesty and power of converging rivers while using just the first six notes taught in most band methods. Bringing together two distinct melodic ideas over powerful harmonic rhythms, Confluence is a mature-sounding work that is very accessible for your beginning band. The flowing middle section gives each instrument group a chance to shine before both themes return for a final, mighty Confluence..

Confluences is a three-movement work for clarinet, violin, violoncello and piano which was composed for the New York Continuum Ensemble in 2001. In the short first movement, a two-note motif wanders through the strings while the piano plays delicate figures in the descant. The second movement, Grazioso, is the most elaborate among the three, beginning with a fast arch-shaped theme played by the clarinet. The final movement, entitled 'peaceful, floating', contains a transparent dialogue between all members of the ensemble. Confluences was premiered at the Knitting Factory in New York City in 2001.

Today, it is hard to believe that Bedrich Smetana kept receiving rejections when he tried to get his enormously popular Moldau printed.

What is also amazing is that the first text-critical edition prepared by the Czech Smetana expert Milan Pospisil in 1999, which had entailed an exhaustive evaluation of the sources and been given a full text-critical editorial treatment as a Eulenburg study score, had no resonance of any kind among performers since no performance material had been published. After 15 years, Pospisils edition is finally being completed in a manner suitable for practice: with a conducting score and orchestral parts which will ensure that all future performances are based on a musical text that is as reliable as can be.
The work depicts the course of the river Vltava, beginning with its first two sources, the cold and warm Vltava, and the confluence of the two streams that join to form a single river; then the course of the Vltava through forests and meadows, and through open countryside where a peasant wedding is being celebrated; water-sprites dance by the light of the moon; on the nearby cliffs castles, mansions and ruins rise proudly into the air; the Vltava eddies in the St John's Rapids, then flows in a broad stream as it continues its course towards Prague, where the Vysehrad appears, before the river finally disappears into the distance as it flows majestically into the Elbe.Vltava (The Moldau), Smetana's best-known and most frequently performed orchestral work, was written between 19 November and 8 December 1874, at a time when Smetana was already completely deaf. The world premiere took place in Prague on 4 April 1875, but the score was not published until 1880.

A beautiful introduction to Smetana's tone poem The Moldau which is a tribute to his native Bohemia and a description of the course of the river from its source to its confluence with the river Elbe. The book is beautifully illustrated and includes information on the piece as well as an easy piano arrangement. Text in German.
