Contemplation is the first movement from the Clarinet Concerto by Jan Van der Roost, which was commissioned by Musica Reservata VOF, Belgium, and is dedicated to the famous clarinet soloist Eddy Vanoosthuyse. A slightly mysterious intro leads to an orchestral climax with ascending melodies and the entrance of the soloist. This occurs at first with fragmentary musical ideas, and then with longer melodic lines. The orchestra delivers the dialogue withthe soloist, and creates a fitting musical frame with a delicate and colourful instrumentation. Towards the end of the music, the atmosphere from the beginning is restored, and the soloist finishes on the same note that he started the piece on. The concerto is also available as a piano reduction. Contemplation is het eerste deel uit het Clarinet Concerto van Jan Van der Roost. Het werd geschreven in opdracht van Musica Reservata VOF (B) en is opgedragen aan Eddy Vanoosthuyse. Een ietwat mysterieuze intro leidt via stijgende melodieën tot een eerste orkestrale climax, waarna de solist zijn intrede doet, eerst met vooral fragmentarische muzikale gegevens, dan met langere melodische lijnen. Het orkest voert een muzikaledialoog met de solist en creëert een gepaste omkadering door middel van een ragfijne en kleurrijke instrumentatie. Programme Note During the composition of my tenth string quartet a flower-name, host-tidlos, came to my mind - and it would not me leave again. [hosttidlos is actually autumn crocus in English, but the composer prefers harvest-timeless, to maintain some of the associations of the Danish flower-name, red.] The paradoxical union of a seasonal time (harvest) and no-time-at-all was a good fit to the sections of the work that I had composed at that time, and I decided to tentatively stick to that title for the work-in-progress, and now, having finished the piece, I can say that is is still a fitting title - and it stands. Enough about the title, I will go on to describe themusic, a somewhat more precarious project. My tenth string quartet is probably the most basic string quartet that I have composed: melodically - and in sound - it employs the naturally based overtones and undertones (perceived at major and minor, respectively), and rhythmically it is based on growth, on the principles of the Golden Section, and the structure itself contrasts abundance and exuberance with sections of immobility and contemplation. However, Melos, melody, is definitely the dominating aspect of my STRING QUARTET NO. 10: behind even the most rhythmically complex or pure sonoric sections lies a firm - if hidden - basis of melodic or polyphonic ideas. The work was composed in 2004-2005 for the Kroger Quartet.

As the title implies, this piece is written in a contemplative manner for beginning students. It is a good piece to demonstrate basic compositional techniques that the students will be able identify easily in the piece. It begins with a lush opening section with an elegant melody to work on musicianship. This is contrasted by the uptempo section of the piece based on the same basic musical material, but in a varied style and frolicking feel. A very satisfying piece for beginning wind players.Contemplation: the action to look thoughtfully at something for a long time.When composing music that will be used with younger students, I want to stimulate thoughtfulness in them. In this particular piece I want the students to be able to stretch their musicianship beyond their experience on their instruments to play in a contemplative manner. To me, this is the essence of musical playing in an emotional and thoughtful way. It is something that cannot be stressed enough, even in students that have just begun to play. As soon as possible, they should be asked to put themselves into the music and make it more than the notes and rhythms on the page.This piece is my attempt to provide very young students, who are just beginning their musical journey, with something they can reach technically, but have to stretch for musically. The amount of notes and rhythms is limited, but students should strive for beauty of tone, good phrasing and emotional involvement.After a short introduction, the heartfelt main theme begins at a lyrical and slow tempo. This is developed with the addition of a secondary theme, featuring the lower voices, before the piece leads to an Allegro section that is based on the same musical material with a difference in tempo and a variation in rhythm patterns. The piece can serve to show students that the same basic music can have an entirely different emotional connection with differences in tempo, rhythm and style, with the first section of the piece being sentimental and the faster section being more joyous in nature. As with all of my pieces for younger students, it is completely acceptable to me for you to adjust the tempo to fit the educational needs of your students.It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece.
