This version of Cortege and Litanie by Marcel Dupré was written for organ. For upper intermediate players, this 8 page composition is written with 4 sharps and includes the use of the pedals. The piece, initially written for a small orchestra in 1922, was created for a play. Dupré integrated it into one of his piano recitals and was later asked to arrange it for other instruments. These scores therefore exist also arranged for piano, orchestra (in 4 and 16) and for the conductor. In terms of composition, the piece is divided into two: “Cortege,” which title describes a solemn procession, begins in E major and lasts twice as long as the introductory theme; and “Litanie,” which is describing the prayer sung during a procession and which follows the “Cortege” part to then be joined by it. Marcel Dupré is a French composer and virtuoso organist who won the Prix de Rome in 1914. He became famous when he played the work of Bach in its totality from memory in 1920. He later became the professor of many renowned students at the Paris Conservatoire such as Messiaen, Langlais and Cochereau among others.

Internationally acclaimed French composer Henri Dutilleux (1916-2013) followed the music traditions of Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy yet implemented his own, distinctive style. His Sarabande et Cortege for Bassoon and Piano displays influences of Debussy's eschewing of tonality and Ravel's inventive textures. These, combined with Dutilleux's unique uses of structure and pedal points create a truly riveting piece for bassoon and piano. Sarabande et Cortege comes at the beginning of Dutilleux's career and was composed as part of a set of four exam pieces for the Paris Conservatoire (1942-1950). Yet the popularity of all four pieces remains, and they continue to be performed to this day. Elements like lyrical melodies and furious semiquaver passages make for an exciting piece for bassoonists.

This unique work is a musical depiction of Beethoven's funeral cortege through the streets of Vienna. Here is a brief description of the work by composer John Frith: It is well documented that at Beethoven's funeral on March 26th, 1827, a choir of trombones and male voices made appropriate music. This is not that music, but rather an attempt to recreate something of the sombre mood of that historic occasion. The work was written in honour of Ruben Carughi and Trombonanza friends for an 8-part low brass ensemble with moderately advanced performers with an instrumentation of: 1 Alto Trombone, 5 Tenor Trombones, Euphonium/Trombone and Tuba/Bass Trombone.
