DarktownStrutters Ball is a fascinating arrangement that captures the atmosphere of the 1920s. Rev. Davis use to tell his students that playing with a bottleneck was ???cheating???. Yet his Whistlin' Blues uses this technique combined with anOpen D6 tuning to create an unusual boogie piano sound. Ernie Hawkins teaches each tune phrase by phrase and carefully shows you the right hand picking as well as the left hand fingerings that were unique to Rev. Davis'sapproach. It is for the student who feels comfortable with an alternating bass technique and wants to expand and explore ideas in blues and ragtime using moreadvanced right and left hand techniques. The four instrumentals featured in this lesosn are all extended compositions offering a variety of musical ideas. Piano sounding blues in the key of A are presented in 'Mississippi Blues'and 'Blues For The Mann'. A Blind Blake approach in the key of C is used for the 'Glory Of Love'. 'Struttin' Rag' in the key of E Brings together thress distinct sections. It opens with a blues piano sounding motif and then stepsinto a more country atmosphere. It finishes with a series of bass licks reminiscent of Merle Travis's 'Walkin' The Strings'.

Arrangements In Vestapol Tuning-'The Open D Tuning (D A D F# A D) also referred to as the Vestapol tuning is a powerful and evocative tuning that was widely used by guitarists in the 1920s to play country blues ballads rags and folk tunes. In this lesson I focus on arranging five of my favorite blues melodies in Vestapol plus an original instrumental.The religious tune When I Lay My Burden Down was in the repertoire of both Black and White traditional guitarists. I have arranged it in an Elizabeth Cotten/Mississippi John Hurt style. The beautiful blues Goin' To Germany was recorded by the Cannon's Jug Stompers in the 1920s. I have always wanted to find the right setting for this melodic countryblues and the Vestapol tuning gave me the feel and textures that I was looking for. Sam McGee played guitar behind Uncle Dave Macon when he recorded I've Got The Morning Blues in Vestapol. This is a fun tune to play and leads nicely in to Hesitation Blues a song recorded by many artists. My arrangement tries to combine a sliding jug sound with some funky blues licks. Peg Leg Howell's Skin Game Blues is a rare example of an early blues song with three distinct sections. Peg Leg played this with a bottleneck but for our arrangement we will rely on our fingers to make the notes sing out.We finish the lesson with Innocence Abroard. An original instrumental that ties together the right and left hand techniques we have studied.A detailed tab/music booklet is included as a PDF file on the DVD. Memphis has long been a landing place for musicians from the surrounding rural areas in Tennessee Arkansas and Mississippi and in the 1920s and 1930s it was a wide open town with plenty of opportunities for musicians to performtheir music and make a living. As a result of Memphis's hub status it developed a strong blues scene in the 1920s and 1930s with a host of outstanding singers and players. Many of these musicians had successful careers asrecording artists but a surprisingly large number of similarly gifted musicians went unrecorded or only got the opportunity to record a few titles.This DVD lesson offers instruction in the music of many of the finestguitarists to record out of Memphis in the 1920s and 1930s.
