RV 588 is Vivaldi's 'other' Gloria, a composition having many parallels with Vivaldi's better-known setting of the same text (RV 589). It dates similarly from the period 1713-1717, when the composer was acting choirmaster at the Ospedale della Pietà in Venice. It even borrows from the same work, a slightly earlier Gloria by the Venetian amateur composer Giovanni Maria Ruggieri, for its closing fugue. However, the present Gloria, RV 588, departs from its more famous counterpart in ingeniously combining its opening movement with the final movement of a specially designed introductory motet, Jubilate o amoeni chori (RV 639/639a), for solo contralto (or soprano) and strings, although Vivaldi makes it possible, through optional cuts indicated in the autograph manuscript in Turin, to perform the Gloria alone. With or without its Introduzione, RV 588 is a masterly work with many memorable moments, not least in its heartfelt second movement set to the words “Et in terra pax”. The Introduction and Critical Commentary for this vocal score prepared by Antonio Frigé are closely based on those of the Critical Edition by Denis Arnold and Michael Talbot, published in 1990.

Pelican Dance was composed in 2022 as part of my annual commitment to create a piece to be premiered by our University of Mobile High School Honor Band. I had a beginning concept for a “dance†piece and was leaning toward something which was a little quirky, fun and not too serious. One day, during my regular commute across Mobile Bay, I noticed the pelicans, elegant birds in the air and water but awkward on land. I tried to imagine a pelican dancing and decided I had my mascot and theme. The opening motif, played in octaves by the whole ensemble in the first measure, is fundamental for the entire work. It is stated in some form at the beginning of each section, is the basis for the first theme and is even used as the bass line later in the piece. It should be clearly stated each time it appears.Performance considerations: Although there are contrasting moments in the work, the tempo should never waiver. It should remain brisk and consistent from section to section.Dynamic contrast is an important aspect of the compositional design and stylistic makeup of the piece. The subito dynamics, fp, etc., need to be almost startling.Percussion drives the energy of this composition to a strong degree, and it is probably the most fun section in the band for this piece. Covering those parts effectively is critically important.

The Ode was admirably set by Mr. Henry Purcell, and performed twice with universal applause. (The Gentlemen's Journal, 1692)The popularity of Purcell's setting is apparent from the many sources that survive and from the printed extracts which appeared almost immediately after its first performance. The primary source for this edition is the largely autograph manuscript in the Bodleian Library. Rather to reduce the orthography to a norm, the capitalization of the vocal text favours Purcell's preferences.(Christopher Hogwood) Vokalensemble Stuttgart und den Kammerchor des Kopernikus-Gymnasiums Wasseralfingen. My father PhDr. Jaroslav Smolka (1933-2011) was a leading Czech musicologist author of books Czech Cantata and Oratorium Fuga in Czech Music Smetana's Orchestra Music Smetana's Vocal Music monography of Jan Dismas Zelenka and many others. He was a legendary teacher of Music History at Prague Music Academy critic recording producer composer; for almost 50 years he was an important and highly respected personality of Prague musical life.My father devoted a lot of time and energy to musical education and activities of my sister and me using often quite original methods such as teaching of intervals and counterpoint through Bartok's Microcosmos ear training filling all imaginable moments of everyday life or lessons of harmony analysis starting with Overture to Tristan and Musorgsky's Catacombs. The Martinu song Wondering Maiden was his solo number in our home vocal productions which he used to sing with amazing devotion while his huge voice was audible in several neighboring streets. My Agnus Dei is closely bound to all this history e.g. by using canon and preferring beauty of dissonant seconds like Bartok or quoting Martinu and his refined neoclassical harmony. Father would be probably a bit critical about the minimalistic monotony of the main body of the piece. Nevertheless firstly he would improvise a short lecture of history of Agnus Dei in Requiem in Czech Music naming by heart many dates and all examples of changes of order of the traditional text by composers. Examples would be sung probably.(Martin Smolka).
