Danse Macabre, or Dance of Death, is one of the most famous works by Camille Saint-Saëns. The composition is based on the poem of the same name by Henri Cazalis (1840-1909).The dance of death is musically represented with various effects, starting with twelve strokes of the clock - which of course suggest midnight. Then dissonant sounds and a somewhat wistful waltz melody follow. A thematic build-up full of tempo changes leads to an intense majestuoso, which ends abruptly, after which a melancholy farewell melody takes over. This wonderful symphonic poem appeals to everyoneâ??s imagination - as it will in this expert arrangement for accordion orchestra.

Saint-Saëns was a great admirer of the symphonic poems by Franz Liszt. His own symphonic poem “Danse macabre†reflects not only his affinity to medieval superstitions but also constitutes a tribute to Liszt’s “Totentanzâ€.“Danse macabre†is based on the eponymous song Saint-Saëns composed in 1872 after Henri Cazalis’ poem. At its premiere, the work was not well-received; in fact it was booed, possibly due to the “diabolic†solo violin playing on an E-string that was tuned down to E-flat, which the audience might have misinterpreted as being out of tune. However within ten years the work had become so popular that Saint-Saëns quoted some of its musical themes in “The Carnival of the Animalsâ€. Since the composer’s death, “Danse macabre†is among the works most often mentioned in connection with the theatrical face of death found in popular mortuary cult.

Danse Macabre started life in 1874 as a tone poem scored for violin and orchestra which vividly describes a poem by Henri Cazalis. As the clock strikes midnight, the cloaked figure of Death appears and calls on the skeletons to dance to the waltz he plays on his violin. The E string is tuned a semitone lower to create a diminished fifth, the dissonant interval referred to as the devil in music during the Middle Ages. The dance builds and builds but eventually, as the cock crows, heralding the approaching dawn, the skeletons vanish back into their graves, and death departs. This arrangement for violin and piano was made by Saint-Saëns himself in 1877.Grade 8Former Spartan Press Cat. Fiendish: devilish: wicked.Danse Diabolique is a moody piece. It is meant to evoke images of a moonlit Halloween night, alive with fiendish creatures engaged in a demonic dance. Inspired by the work of French composer Camille Saint-Saëns, this piece is best characterized by the expressive marking, sinister. The melody of this 6/8 piece is played in a smooth, legato style in contrast to the crisp pizzicato accompaniment. Care should be taken never to rush the pizzicato passages. Dynamics should be emphasized throughout, and sixteenth notes should be played off the string, with accuracy, in a spiccato style.

This suite was inspired most notably by the saxophone quartets of Phil Woods and was written in a conscious attempt to wed certain stylistic elements of classical and jazz music. The players are not asked to improvise, but the piece does feature sections that sound spontaneous and freely created. The piece is difficult, but no more so than other quartets, like Glazunov and Desenclos, that are standard repertoire for this instrumentation. Talented high school and all college groups will find success working on this piece. The first movement, subtitled Danse Macabre, is ominous, dark, sometimes bluesy, and is propelled along by the use of intricate counterpoint and an improvised sounding solo section for the tenor saxophone.
