Universal Edition presents the last extended version of Boulez' Derive 2 in a 2006 revision. When I reflected on some of Ligeti's compositions, wrote Boulez, I felt the desire to dedicate myself to some almost theoretical research into periodicity in order to systematically examine its overlays, its shifts and its exchange. Tom Service, in The Guardian, describes the work: I had the sense...that although the piece was 45 minutes long, it could either have been 20 minutes or 200 and it wouldn't really have mattered. All of the music you hear in it is based on a single chord (derived - see what I've done there? - from a musical transliteration of the initials of Paul Sacher's name). Everything changes on the surface - there are passages where everything is speeding along vertiginously, which then contract into pools of slower music - but nothing changes underneath. It's a musical world that's completely hermetic and yet infinitely expandable. Weird.

Prelude to Mastery The Missa Sanctissimae Trinitatis was probably composed within a few weeks in the late fall of 1736, an occasion for the composition is not recorded. With this mass, the first in a series of five late masses, Jan Dismas Zelenka entered upon the phase of his masterful late works. Its spacious conception abundant in numbers, stylistic and compositional wealth, as well as its vehement, musical expressive power clearly differentiate this work from Zelenka's previous masses. This new edition is based on the corresponding volume of the series Das Erbe deutscher Musik, from which the preface and critical report also derive.Have a look into the piano vocal score. Zelenka's artistic personality, his biography and his compositional style are utterly distinctive. His style is highly experimental. Was Zelenka really one of the greatest composers of the 18th century, or only one of the most interesting? I think that he still has several surprises for us. (Schweizerische Musikzeitung)Zelenka's Masses - fine specimens of Baroque choral literature, some parts of which are set even more colorfully than in the corresponding compositions by Bach. (Die Welt).

Prokofiev's Piano Sonatas 6â??8 are often referred to as â??war sonatasâ?, since they were composed in Russia during World War II during times of great hardship. As the shortest of the three, no. 7 is entirely focused on the essentials, and is certainly Prokofiev's most famous piano sonata. Anyone who has heard it will not forget the hasty first movement, marked â??Allegro inquietoâ?, the cantabile theme of the second movement and the relentless pull of the machine-like, thudding finale. The Sonata appeared in print in 1943 and that same year received the Stalin Prize (second category), including prize-money of 50,000 rubles, which was welcomed with great joy in the Prokofiev household. You can also derive joy from Prokofiev's Seventh Sonata, here critically edited on the basis of all the sources, and produced using Henle's legendary music engraving. A preface by the world's most prominent Prokofiev researcher, Simon Morrison, rounds off the edition.

From the composer: These pieces [24 Preludes for Piano] were composed without interruption over several months. As a consequent they exhibit a fairly narrow range in style and expressive intent, rather like a collection of short stories that take place in restricted time and location. I chose to call the set 'Preludes' partly because of the joy I still derive from sets with the same title, most notably those from Bach, Chopin and Rachmaninoff..

The Actus tragicus or Gottes Zeit ist die allerbeste Zeit BWV 106 remains one of Bach's best-known and most admired works, one which continues to resonate to this day - a work of genius such as even great masters seldom achieve (Alfred Durr). The cantata is one of the earliest known vocal works by Johann Sebastian Bach. It was written during his time at Muhlhausen, probably in 1707, when Bach took up the position of organist at the Divi Blasii Church. A possible occasion for its composition may have been the funeral of the mayor of Muhlhausen, Adolph Strecker. The short, slow Sonatina with two recorders, two gambas and continuo gets the listener into the mood of the character of the cantata. This instrumental combination is unique in Bach's vocal output, but could derive from a central German tradition. This new edition is a critical-practical edition which combines both the latest discoveries in Bach research with a detailed Critical Report as well as addressing current questions on performance practice. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3110600.
