The title The Deserted Churchyards refers to several churchyards along the western coast of Northern Jutland, which long ago were safely inland, but which now are being eaten up by the threatening sea. Though The Deserted Churchyards is an independent work, it can also be played as a Prelude to Funeral Procession. The Deserted Churchyards was commissioned by Lerchenborg Music Days and is dedicated to Louise Lerche-Lerchenborg.

Ancient Desert Drone was composed for orchestra in 1940 at the request of Percy Grainger, who encouraged the idea of using a single pitch “drone” throughout the work (similar to Grainger's own The Immovable Do) and to whom the piece is dedicated. While the work suggests an Eastern charm with its distinctive mode and primitive rhythms, Cowell himself stated there was no particular programmatic intent. 'Landscape With Deserted House' is a piece of a dark and very individual character, almost a 'gothic piece'. The topos of the deserted house comes from the literature of Victorian England, but also points toward the present time, especially toward Northern Europe where, after half a century of migration from the countryside, countless houses and estates are unoccupied and left to decay.It is especially the percussion part of 'Landscape With Deserted House', mainly played on simple everyday objects, that refers to this aspect of the title while the other instruments create a sound space full of peculiar poetry in finely tuned mixtures. A piece which will delight every professional musician with experience in modern playing techniques.

Henderson is a city in Clark County, Nevada, just southeast of Las Vegas and surrounded by desert: this was the inspiration for the title. Desert Dances opens with a lively introduction, mostly in 3/4, which pervades the faster sections of the piece. This subsides to introduce a slower dance which expands to a full-band climax. The introduction soon returns and leads to the main theme of the piece, a waltz-like melody played by the full ensemble. A short bridge passage follows, which leads to a legato central theme. This is played twice and heralds the return of the main theme and a short coda which closes the work. An imaginative work for concert or contest with nice features throughout all groups of the band.

Maslanka's wind ensemble writing is highly prized among college and university bands. One young fan asked if Maslanka had ever written a clarinet concerto. No one has asked, said he. I'm asking, said she, and Desert Roads for clarinet and wind ensemble was underway. Since its premiere in 2005 (Margaret Dees, clarinet, and Dallas Wind Symphony), Desert Roads has been programmed by many major university wind ensembles, and has been recorded by the Illinois State University Wind Ensemble (Stephen Steele, cond.). A thorough discussion of the work became a doctoral thesis by Joshua Mietz. We now present the work in piano reduction.
