Great occasions call for great musicThe Dettingen Te Deum is a brilliant example of how Handel could capture the tone for festive occasions as had never been done before. The expression of the exalted character of this official work is imparted through Handel’s express use of timpani and trumpets. Gentler and more serious movements effectively complement the work. The basis for the present critical edition of this work is the London autograph, which has survived and from which Handel probably conducted the first performance. In addition, the initial concluding version of the chorus “Make them to be number’d” has been published in this edition. In this version Handel strived for a more compact and stricter voice leading.Edition based on the autograph, from which Handel conducted the first performanceDetailed foreword in three languagesCritical report with information about the source situation, the edition, and containing the individual readings (alternative readings, etc.). Score available separately - see item CA.5528300.

The Dettinger Te Deum was written to celebrate England's victory over the French at the Battle of Dettingen. It is Handel's last and most successful setting of the Te Deum and reveals a deep understanding of the English church music tradition. The sound impact of this broadly conceived work is governed by the choirs in an almost theatrical exegesis of the text. Particularly striking are several borrowings from the Messiah which Handel had just completed. This edition, edited by Baroque specialist Amanda Babington, is based on the Urtext from the Halle Handel Edition.* First Urtext edition* Includes a Foreword (Eng/Ger).

In keeping with the victorious mood, Handel often splits the chorus into five voices (with divided sopranos) for passages of pure homophony. When the choir declaim as one, the effect is of joyful celebration. To start each phrase on the right note, it is essential to be familiar with the orchestral interludes. The cantabile movements, such as No. 3, can be particularly tricky to perform: The vocal leaps in these demanding choral-soprano sections become much easier if you can hear the underlying harmonies while practicing. The same is true for No. 5.The Carus Choir Coach offers choir singers the unique opportunity to study and learn their own, individual choral parts within the context of the sound of the entire choir and orchestra. For every vocal range a download containing each choir part is available. The Carus Choir Coach is based on recorded interpretations by renowned artists who have performed the work from carefully prepared Carus Urtext editions. Each choir part is presented in three different versions:Original recordingCoach: each part is accompanied by the piano, with the original recording sounding in the backgroundCoach in slow mode: the tempo of the coach slows down to 70% of the original version â through this reduction passages can be learned more effectively.Performers: Dorothee Mields (soprano), Ulrike Andersen (alto), Mark Wilde (tenore), Chris Dixon (basso) â Alsfelder Vokalensemble, Concerto Polacco â Wolfgang Helbich.
