Day of Wrath (translated from the Latin Dies Irae), with its dramatic extremes of emotion, is the perfect choice for any concert or festival. Students may recognize it from the video game Mobile Strike! This setting by Verdi in his Requiem Mass was first performed in 1874 and now has been arranged by Deborah Baker Monday. Repeated sixteenth notes are used extensively along with divided parts to create a full, sonorous effect with huge dynamic contrasts from the fortissimo opening to the morendo ending. (2:05).

This five-movement work for piano, string quintet, oboe, horn, mezzo and soprano soloists, and SATB choir was commissioned in 2020 by Gary Packwood, director of choral studies at Mississippi State University, and dedicated to the Mississippi State University State Singers for the opening of the new music building. The piece is based on Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood by the English Romantic poet William Wordsworth. These writings, along with others, represent the greatest lyrics of his maturity. In these poems Wordsworth presents a fully developed yet morally flexible picture of the relationship between human beings and the natural world. When Wordsworth completed this work in 1804, he called it simply Ode, and the poem carried this title when it was published in 1807. In 1815, when the poem was republished, Wordsworth expanded the title to Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Recollections of Early Childhood. Intimations means hints, inklings, or indirect suggestions. Written by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) in 1934, this set of variations for piano solo and orchestra on Niccolò Paganini's Caprice No. 24 for solo violin is much like a concerto, though it consists of a single movement with an introduction of the theme and twenty-four variations. The most well-known of the variations is the lyrical 18th, and it has been used in numerous movies over the years. In addition to Paganini's theme as the thematic foundation, the Dies irae theme found in the requiem mass and which features so prominently in Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique is also featured at times. Two complete settings of the Requiem by Johann Adolf Hasse are extant. Hasse composed the Requiem in C major on the death of the Elector Friedrich August 11 of Saxony. Only a few weeks later his son the elector Friedrich Christian also died. Presumably for this reason Hasse wrote the Requiem in D flat, and because of the shortage of time he used the Sanctus and Agnus of a Requiem in B flat which he had composed earlier. The principal sections Introitus/Kyrie and Dies irae probably date from 1763 and 1764.

This volume makes available for the first time the original version of the four-part Requiem by Orlando di Lasso (1532-1594) in a modern edition. The work was recently discovered in a choirbook at the Benedictine Abbey of St. Ulrich and Afra in Augsburg. This version dates from 1575, three years earlier than the previously-known versions of 1578 and 1588, and contains a polyphonic setting of the Dies irae sequence. It is also notated a fourth or fifth lower. The resulting low scoring for tenor, baritone and two basses creates a new kind of solemn and sensuous sound amongst the compositions by the brilliant Munich court Kapellmeister.

Symphonie Fantastique was written in 1830 as one of the first program symphonies in musical history. The Witches' Sabbath is the fifth and final movement tells the story of the author himself amongst a hideous gathering of sorcerers, monsters and witches who have come together for his funeral. The original melody from the first movement is now a vulgar and grotesque dance. Berlioz also combines the Dies irae melody to strike even more fear into the listener.This arrangement of about 10 minutes in length by Randall Malmstrom is a full transcription of the movement and is appropriate for advanced performers.
