Par MOZART WOLFGANG AMADEUS. Mozart composed his two “Lodron Serenades” for open-air performances on the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron in June 1776 and 1777. Their bright “al fresco” character is immediately recognisable. Alfred Einstein considered these two divertimentos to be “among the purest, gayest, most satisfying, and most perfect that ever assumed musical form”. For both works Mozart chose an ensemble of two horns, two violins, viola and bass instruments. However, the second Lodron Serenade, the Divertimento in B-flat major K. 287, stands out from this sextet format by assigning a remarkably virtuosic solo role to the first violin, from the richly diverse opening movement to the finale with its almost ironic recitative and an exhilarating passage on the folk song “D’Bäurin hat d’Katz verlorn”. Mozart himself played first violin in the 1777 performance. Later he wrote, “They all opened their eyes! (First) Lodron Night Music-The Divertimento K. 247 in F-flat major was composed for the name day of Countess Antonia Lodron and was first performed on 18 June 1776 in Salzburg. The little March K. 248 was presumably used to accompany the arrival anddeparture of the musicians on that occasion it shares the same date of composition as the Divertimento is in the same key and is scored for the same instruments. Mozart later returned several times to this ?First Lodron nightmusic? and posterity appreciated it too: the Divertimento was published just a few years after his death and was also available in numerous 19th century copies. The only authorised sources for our Urtext edition however werethe two autographs. Here incidentally the lowest part is designated ?Basso? which leaves open the question as to whether it was to be played by a cello a double bass or both a typical case of ?as you like it? in the music ofthe 18th century!

Octet in F major D 803-Franz Schubert's Octet In F major D 803 for Clarinet (B flat/C) Bassoon Horn (F/C) 2 Violins Viola Violoncello and Double Bass.This composition was modelled on Beethoven?s Septet op. 20 whose Divertimento character and six-part layout were adopted by Schubert although he merely expanded the instrumentation by adding a second Violin.In a letter he numbered his octet amongst the chamber music workswith which he desired to blaze a ?path to the great symphony?. It can no longer be ascertained whether the composition was commissioned by Count Ferdinand Troyer who had a musical salon in Vienna and played the Clarinet. We onlyknow that Schubert composed the work at the beginning of 1824 taking only a few weeks to do so and that it was performed at Troyer?s shortly afterwards. Today it is one of the most popular larger chamber music works.

Les nombreux divertimenti pour cordes et vents de Haydn sont de la musique de circonstance d?humeur joyeuse. On connaît mal le contexte de leur composition. Cependant un grand nombre de ces divertimenti sont relativement précoces et datent de l?époque où Haydn se maintenait à flot en composant des ?uvres de commande. C?est d?ailleurs le cas du divertimento en sol majeur Hob. II:9 composé pour la formation inhabituelle comportant deux hautbois deux cors deux violons deux altos et basse continue. Il s?agit vraisemblablement d?une ?uvre de commande des années 1750. Sa vitalité débordante laisse déjà éclater le génie de Haydn.

Bien des connaisseurs et amateurs comptent le Trio en Mi b?mol majeur K. 563 de Mozart comme ?tant l?une de ses compositions les plus extraordinaires. Cette ?uvre magistrale qualifi?e de ?Divertimento? dans le catalogue d??uvres autographe de Mozart confronte l??diteur Urtext ? de grands d?fis. L?autographe est en effet perdu depuis toujours et l?on ne poss?de aucune autre source de premier plan. La source la plus fiable quoiqu?? l??vidence impr?cise est la premi?re ?dition parue deux mois apr?s la mort de Mozart. De nombreuses ?ditions du XXe si?cle ont malheureusement reproduit le texte musical de ?l?ancienne ?dition int?grale? de Breitkopf & H?rtel due au grand violonisteJoseph Joachim mais reposant sur des mod?les fautifs et qui de ce fait est totalement corrompue. De m?me la ?Nouvelle ?dition Mozart? n?est pas d?pourvue de fautes. L??dition Henle suit pour l?essentiel la premi?re ?dition non sans avoir recours ? de nombreuses interventions rectificatrices qui sont comment?es dans l?apparat critique. En appendice ? l??dition on trouvera le mouvement pour trio ? cordes en Sol majeur K. Anh. 66 (562e) parvenu seulement de mani?re fragmentaire. Quel malheur que Mozart n?ait pas achev? cette tout aussi merveilleuse page ? elle va toutefois un peu au-del? de l?exposition et convient ainsi parfaitement ? un petit bis. Gr?ce ? une mise en page soign?e comme par exemple divers d?pliants et des pages blanches les trois parties s?par?es offrent une parfaite fluidit? de lecture et de jeu. L??dition de travail disponible s?par?ment (HN 9625) propose la partition correspondant ? ces parties s?par?es.

Trio in C major op. 87 - Variations in C major WoO 28-Both of these works for two oboes and cor anglais which Beethoven composed in the 1790s belong to the lighter genre of serenades and divertimentos. He might have written them in response to a commission or have been inspired bythe prevailing popularity of this delicate combination of instruments.Likewise with the Variations WoO 28 on the famous theme 'La ci darem la mano' by Mozart he made a contribution of his own to the arrangements ofoperatic melodies for wind ensembles that were so popular at the time.This Urtext edition follows the recently published volume in the Beethoven Complete Edition and thus reflects the latest scholarly research onBeethoven.
