En 1938, Dimitri Chostakovitch compose la Suite pour Orchestre de Jazz n° 2. Cette suite témoigne de l’éclat et de l’esprit qui marquent l’orchestration de Chostakovitch, mais la musique ne correspond guère l’idée que l’on se fait communément du jazz. Le compositeur recourt plutôt un style qui s’apparente la musique légère. La Suite n° 2 est enracinée dans la Vienne de Johann Strauss comme en témoigne la Valse n° 2.
