Ninja is a Grade 2 piece playable by any young band, due to extensive doublings throughout. The mood of the piece is mysterious, reflecting the image of ninjas being seen one moment and gone the next. Flute 3 is not essential as it doubles the oboes, but is useful in case you have a lot of flutes or due to a limited number of oboes. If you donat have a bass clarinet, baritone saxophone or bassoons, those parts are covered in the low brass. The timpani part is optional, and the piece wonat suffer if you donat have access to that percussion. The optional F-chime and gong only play in the final measure of the piece. While adding a notable effect at the end, those instruments wonat be missed if you donat have them available. The tom-tom part can be played on a snare drum with the snares off or may be played on a tenor drum. Care should be taken that accented notes are emphasized, but never become ponderous. The half notes at the beginning of the piece should not be accented. The theme is introduced in the first twelve measures, and at m. 13 many of the instruments trade the melody for half notes and vice-versa. Be careful that the percussion section never becomes overpowering. At m. 25, care should be taken that there is quite a volume difference between ff and mp. Think of this representing the ninjas being seen one moment and being hidden the next. The double staccato figures at m. 33 should not be accented. Trumpets and trombones at m. 37 should not be overly legato, but certainly shouldnat be treated as staccatos. Being aware of not accenting notes that donat have accents will make the accents at m. 49 more dramatic. Please note that the legato notes at mm. 58 and 60 are not to be accented.Ninja is a Grade 2 piece playable by any young band, due to extensive doublings throughout. Personal Note My high school band director, Clarence F. Wroblewski, died on November 24, 2018. In the 1950s, he was a pioneer in the field of public school instrumental music in Baltimore City. He was my mentor and my dear friend. It was his guidance and encouragement that set my young life's course on the path of music. Performance Notes Ceremony of Peace contains only the notes of the ascending pentatonic scale: Bb, C, Eb, F, and G. The middle voice written for Oboe, Tenor Sax and Horn uses the note D at cadences. The character of the music should give the impression of ceremonial music performed on primitive instruments. The Tom-Tom parts are exactly the same as the Snare Drum and Bass Drum parts. The director may decide whether to use one or the other or both. If Snare Drum with snares off is used, try it with mallets instead of drum sticks. If a Bass Drum is used be certain that it does not overpower the band. The director may choose to turn it on its side and muffle it with a towel. In the Percussion 2 part Sleigh Bells may double with the Tambourine to add a primitive, ceremonial sound. The Clarinet part may be doubled an octave higher in bands where this is possible.Personal NoteMy high school band director, Clarence F. Wroblewski, died on November 24, 2018. Now, one of most unusual works of our time is available as study score in a facsimile edition: 'Delusion of the Fury'. At the time of creation, the great experimenter and sound researcher Harry Partch had fully developed his special scale system. By having specially designed instruments made, he created the prerequisites to bring his ideas of sound and harmony onto the stage. Using 25 of these special instruments, 'Delusion of the Fury' provides the opportunity to experience the musical universe of one of the most extraordinary American composers of the 20th century in all its nuances and hypnotic power.1. Written in memory of the composer's mother, Will Todd's Songs of Peace is a six-movement work about love and loss. Two of the movements are scored for upper voices. Although it is not a conventional Requiem, it might be appropriate in a memorial context, butshould by no means be confined to it: in many ways it is a very 'life-affirming' work, characterised by ToddÂ’s recognisable jazz-infused harmonic language, memorable melodies, and powerful and personal texts. Songs of Peace is designed as a work which may be performed complete, as separate movements (two of which are scored for upper voices) or as a selection. It can be accompanied by piano alone (as written, embellished or extemporised - chord symbols are supplied where appropriate) or jazz trio (piano, bass and drums - parts available separately at www.boosey.com/SongsOfPeace).

From the haunting opening strains of What Wondrous Love Is This? to the tender, moving rendition of Jesus, Keep Me Near The Cross, this work for Holy Week skillfully weaves simple narration, scripture, and hymn texts and tunes into a powerful presentation of the Savior's suffering. Familiar hymns and new material are designed to impress upon the congregation and choir alike the magnitude of the sacrifice our Lord endured for our salvation. The closing anthem is a triumphant testimony to the victory of Easter, and may be used separately as an Easter anthem, allowing the rest of the work to stand complete as a service for Good Friday. Performance time: 30 minutes. Flute, Oboe, opt. Clarinet, Horn, Trumpet 1/2, Double Bass, Conductor's score, trombone 1/2, percussion (windchime, sus cym, bells, triangle) snare drum, timpani, harp, violin 1/2, viola, cello.

Recorded in 1998 by the Monday Night Big Band on their Thanks To Thad album, this is Part 3 of Thad's larger Return Journey Suite. It features lots of powerful writing for the full ensemble and abundant solo opportunities -- an open solo section for alto, tenor, trumpet and/or trombone, and piano and/or guitar. After a loud shout, a series of short drum solos lead to a strong finish. Duration 5:30.
