ISBN 9790365067633. This sonata (WeissSW No. 25, Dresden) is one of a new series of eight sonatas by Silvius Leopold Weiss arranged for the first time for guitar and published by Metropolis Music. Sonata XXIX comes from a set of tablature manuscript volumes in the Sächsisches Landesbibliothek in Dresden (Ms. Mus. 2841-â?V-â?1). There are five volumes with a total of 34 sonatas of Weiss for solo lute. The sonatas are ordered by key and further sorted by size or complexity. Sonata XXIX comes from Weissâ??s middle â??productiveâ?? period, around 1720. The Sonata has seven movements: Prelude, Allemande (andante), Passepied, Bourée, Sarabande, Menuet, and it ends with a Gigue. There is another copy of this Sonata, known as Suite XIX, in a London Manuscript (British Library Ms. Add. 30387). The London version does not include a Prelude, and the Sarabande is completely different. The other movements are similar to those in the Dresden Manuscript. The Sonata in this Edition is based on the Dresden Manuscript. The purpose of beginning a lute sonata with a Prelude is to introduce the specific key and the harmonic design of the sonata. However, not every sonata in the Dresden and London manuscripts has a Prelude. About one third of the 34 Dresden Sonatas opens with a Prelude, but only six of them may be considered truly integral to the sonata. The other preludes are composed in a rather â??rudimentaryâ?? style, as a model for the less experienced lute player to improvise on the central key and theme. The Prelude in this particular Sonata cannot be regarded as integral. It has been added later, either by the compiler of the volumes or perhaps by Weiss himself. Originally, the Sonata is written in G minor, a key not often used by Weiss, but considered appropriate for playing the lute. With the guitar, however, the key is rather awkward. For ease and effectiveness of playing, I have transposed the Sonata a minor third lower to E minor. To create more concordance with the baroque tuning of the lute, the G string is lowered by a semitone to F sharp. I suggest using a capodastro to achieve the original pitch. Based on the present standard of A at 440 Hertz, the capo should be placed at the 3rd fret. However, during Weissâ??s lifetime, it was more common in many parts of Germany to use a standard of A at 415 Hertz -â? a semitone lower. There is another copy of this Sonata, known as Parte (or Partita) no. 11, in a London Manuscript (British Library Ms. Add. 30387). The London Manuscript seems to be incomplete. It does not include a Menuet and a Gavotte. The Sonata in this Edition is based on the Dresden Manuscript. However, both the Prelude and the Bourée are coming from the London copy. The Dresden Prelude is regarded as spurious, and the London Bourée is more lively and in balance with the other movements. In a few passages of the Ouverture and the Courante I have made some adaptions on the basis of the London manuscript, to create the best of the two versions. In the Ouverture I have omitted the repeat indications. There are two Menuets in the Dresden Sonata. One has been crossed in the original manuscript with the accompanying note: ist nicht von Mr Weis. The other one has been added later, probably by the compiler of the volumes. The original London Prelude of this particular Sonata is composed in a â??simplifiedâ?? style; a common practice for adding preludes to lute sonatas in the 18th century. I have added the original example to my transcribed version. Perhaps it invites others to make their own arrangement. Originally, the Sonata is written in B flat major, a key often used by Weiss as it is appropriate for playing the lute. With the guitar, however, the key is rather awkward. For ease and effectiveness of playing, I have transposed the Sonata a minor third lower to G major. The Ouverture substitutes the traditional Allemande. It is more complex in structure, and includes a Largo, an Allegro (in the style of a Fugue), and a Vivace. The use of tempo indications for French dance movements is characteristic for the later work of Weiss. Originally, the Sonata is written in C minor, a key appropriate for playing a Baroque lute tuned in the D minor chord. However it is rather awkward with the guitar. It is generally quite easy to adapt sonatas for Baroque oboe (and continuo) to the soprano recorder since both instruments have an identical range. Yet considering the great popularity of the previously published works, it is strange that Antonio Vivaldi's only sonata for this instrument has received little attention to date. This edition is based on a manuscript preserved in the Sachsische Landesbibliothek Dresden under the class. no. Mus. 2389-S-1. The preparation of the edition entailed the adjustment of the accidentals to present-day practice, and the realization of the (unfigured) thoroughbass part. No slurs were added to those already contained in the manuscript so as to allow the performer to find his own solutions. Otherwise the virtually error-free manuscript was reproduced without change. Edition de Reinhard Goebel Nearly all of the music from the seventeenth-century court at Dresden was unfortunately lost when Frederick II of Prussia bombarded the city in 1756. Fragments of the repertoire, however, have been preserved in the libraries of the courts of Protestant northern Europe, which were connected to Dresden by friendship or familial ties. Some of these works are presented here as they have been performed and recorded by the ensemble Musica Antiqua Koln, directed by Reinhard Goebel. The editions include both scores and parts. Dresden Sonatas 3 presents two works for three violins, two violas, and basso continuo by Johann Wilhelm Furchheim (ca. 1635–82), as well as the Rondeau in C Major by Johann Joseph Fux (1660–1741), which features violino piccolo and bassoon, with an accompanying ensemble of violin, two violas, and basso continuo.

Silvius Leopold Weiss (1687 1750) is known to guitarists as the greatest baroque composer for the lute, yet most are only familiar with the earlier portion of Weiss?s prolific output found in the British Library in London. Inspired by a forty-year friendship with the late Douglas Alton Smith - a major figure in the scholarly study of the history of the lute - guitarist, composer, and head of the guitar program at Temple University in Philadelphia, Allen Krantz explored the Weiss manuscripts found in other European cities, particularly the Dresden editions which contain the fifteen sonatas that Weiss produced from the late 1730s to the end of his life. Transcriptions of three of those fifteen late sonatas are featured in this book in modern standard notation along with the original lute tablature as found in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek - Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek, Dresden. While the baroque lute?s tuning makes some works awkward or impossible on the guitar, the three works presented here?Sonatas No. 35 in D minor, No. 42 in A minor and No. 45 in A Major? are in their original keys which happen to be guitar-friendly. The author?s generous and scholarly ?Preface? provides thorough historical and performance notes for the music in this volume. The Opus 28, in D-minor, in three movements, was completed in 1907 and was introduced in Dresden, Germany. The Opus 36, in B-flat minor, also in three movements, was written and 1913 but was later revised by the composer.

Opere incomplete Ed. critica e ricostruzione di M. Talbot-Critical edition by Michael Talbot. The vast majority of violin sonatas from Vivaldi?s time including those of Vivaldi himself have come down to us in the form of a score employing two staves: one for violin and one for bass. This guarantees that although portions of the work may be missing what survives is textually complete. Exceptionally five of Vivaldi?s violin sonatas are preserved solely in a partbook for violin held by the Diözesanarchiv Graz the complementary part for cello having disappeared. The sonatas appear to date from the period between the Dresden group (1716-1717) and the Manchester set (c. 1726). Three of the sonatas which all have four movements possess partial concordances in other sources with which they share two or three movements but two of them ? RV 11 and RV 37 ? have so far been found only in Graz (with the exception of an incipit for RV 11 found in a contemporary thematic catalogue). This critical edition makes these two works available for study and performance. The bass part is an editorial reconstruction and there is in addition a realization of the continuo by the editor.

It is generally quite easy to adapt sonatas for Baroque oboe (and continuo) to the soprano recorder since both instruments have an identical range. Yet considering the great popularity of the previously published works it is strange that Antonio Vivaldi's only sonata for this instrument has received little attention to date.This edition is based on a manuscript preserved in the Sächsische Landesbibliothek Dresden under the class. no. Mus. 2389-S-1. The preparation of the edition entailed the adjustment of the accidentals to present-day practice and the realization of the (unfigured) thoroughbass part. No slurs were added to those already contained in themanuscript so as to allow the performer to find his own solutions. Otherwise the virtually error-free manuscript was reproduced without change.

Sonata in a minor for Violin and Basso continuo-There has been increased general interest in the Bohemian composer Johann Baptist Georg Neruda (c. 1711 1776) over the past few years especially due to his frequently played trumpet concerto. A respectedviolinist and longstanding member of the Dresden Court Orchestra he did however mainly compose for the Violin. The substantial and technically quite demanding Violin Sonata in a minor was published for the first timeever in 1982 as part of Henle's edition ?Bohemian Violin Sonatas? (HN 334). Henle are now proud to present it in a practical single edition with a new preface as well as an additional unmarked part.
