This is a piano duet for advanced students. The three movements may be performed together or separately. The 'edge' of the titles refers to the upper surface of the water as it reflects or refracts light. A version for string orchestra is available on hire.

for Piano and Orchestra-The seven years that the Spanish composer Falla spent in Paris (from 1907 to 1914) marked a turning point in his compositions. His encounter with contemporary French Impressionist music made a big impact on him. From then on itwas to leave its mark on his oeuvre which was otherwise inspired by Spanish folk music. It was thanks to the advice of the pianist Ricardo Viñes and the composer Isaac Albéniz that Falla decided to expand his ?Nocturnes? for solopiano of 1909 into a three-part symphonic suite for piano and orchestra. He finally completed it in 1915 and named it ?Noches en los jardines de España? (?Nights in the gardens of Spain?). Yuja Wang kindly provided fingerings forthe solo piano part of de Falla?s enchanting musical evocation of his Andalusian homeland.

This thoroughly entertaining set of arrangements from Mike Cornick is a must have for piano duettists. Perfect as encore items as the title suggests these pieces could of course be suitably placed anywhere in the concert programme. John Philip Sousa's The Liberty Bell will be happily recognised as the Monty Python theme music by many members of the audience and Abe Holzman's Blaze Away will set everyone's feet tapping. The rousing traditional Hebrew song Hava Nagila and the popular Billy Boy will have the audience's full attention as will the Radetzky March which is now a traditional encore for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra's New Year's Day concerts. The Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra was written in June and July of 1986 in Brasília and is dedicated to the composer's son Marcelo. The work was originally written for marimba and string orchestra and was premiered in the USA the same year with the Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra in Wisconsin under the direction of Manuel Prestamo. With the commercial success of a 1990 CD and video by Scottish percussionist Evelyn Glennie and the London Symphony Orchestra, the Concerto rapidly came to be regarded as part of the standard literature for percussion. It is considered to be the most popular marimba concerto today, and has been performed by more than eight hundred orchestras worldwide. The concerto contains four movements - unusual for the concerto form - which follow the fast-slow-fast pattern, with the medium tempo third movement inserted before the vigorous finale. Some Brazilian motifs and jazz elements are used throughout the piece, which contains strong rhythmic patterns and catchy melodies. The marimba leads the thematic material throughout much the piece, and as a result, the marimba part of certain movements can be performed solo, without orchestral accompaniment. This concerto a new addition to the literature for guitar and orchestra casts the guitar almost as a member of the percussion family from the very beginning explosive in its energy easing into song for its secondtheme.An extensive cadenza takes the soloist to the highest note before plunging into an appropriately hectic ending. A simple (but all the more telling) guitar solo opens and closes the middle movement a nocturne withanother extended cadenza. The movement starts in meditation grows into a broad chorale-like melody and moves into rage before the orchestra intervenes to return to the calm of the beginning. The boisterous and carefree flavourof the last movement sketched while on holiday in Antigua during Carnival gives the concerto its nickname.This riotous and exuberant finale generates an irresistible rumba bringing together themes first heard at thevery beginning of the work particularly the rasqueado strumming and the tamburo percussive effects. Sir Edward Elgar was born in Worcester in 1857. Until the outstanding success of the 'Enigma' Variations in 1899 he was considered a 'provincial' composer - and a largely self taught one at that.In the earlier part of Elgar's career as a composer he wrote several short pieces which became very popular indeed. Chanson de Matin is one such the second of a pair (the other being Chanson de Nuit) which carried his name far and wide before his larger orchestra works appeared. It was published in several versions at once: for string orchestra for small orchestra for violin and piano and so on - so it is almost impossible to say with any degree of certainty which was theoriginal version. This arrangement makes a useful addition to the repertoire for oboe.
