The long awaited Sassmannshaus method “Early Start on the Double Bass” is now here. At last students of the largest instrument in the string family can make use of this tried and tested method for beginners, developed by Egon Sassmannshaus for the other string instruments and applied here to the double bass by Holger Sassmannshaus and J. Note also if you wish to perform these works with full orchestra and you are short certain instruments you still have some flexibility with the score. For example if there are not enoughviolas for balance the viola (harmony part) and 3rd violin part are identical. The part may be played with all 3rd violins or equally divided between 3rd violins and violas.

J. S. Bach’s two-part keyboard pieces form a significant body of musical literature but only occasionally have they been arranged for strings. This carefully transcribed collection of cello duets and its two companion volumes Duets for Two Violins (MB # 21437) and Duets for Two Violas (MB # 21438) bring many additions taken from Bach’s suites preludes and inventions to the string player’s repertoire. The study of string instruments should include ensemble playing at the earliest possible stage. There is much to be gained from the playing of duets. Each player learns how to listen to the other, and in a short time develops an awareness of balance, musical phrasing, intonation, and tone quality. This type of training is excellent preparation for participation in large groups.
