Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics Vol. 2135-In 1839 Friedrich August Kummer (1797-1879)  wrote Violoncelloschule für den ersten Unterricht(Violoncello School for Preliminary Instruction) Op. 60. The method has remained a staple ofteaching literature ever since.As an appendix to this work Kummer composed several duets of increasing difficulty that can be paired with the topics and exercises learned in the lessons. As cello technique changed duringthe nineteenth century several cellists (Friedrich Dotzauer Bernhard Romberg and Leo Schulty) added other duets bringing the total to 110. Selected Pupil/Teacher Cello Duets contains the first 85collected in the 1900 Schirmer edition of these etudes extracted to be used in lessons to enforce technical and musical issues as they arise.

The violin pupil can be accompanied either by the violin teacher (as a violin duet) or with piano. The optional alternative piano accompaniments are by Heidi Rolfe.'I can still remember the thrill I felt as a child of 8 when my violin teacher introduced me to my first concertino. Learning playing and eventually mastering the famous Küchler Concertino in D major made me feel privileged and grown-up as if I were joining a very special club.That was a long time ago yet for me concertinos still hold a distinctive place in the teaching repertoire. Having now taught the violin for the last thirty years and seen how happily my pupils respond to learningduets - that distinctive sense of enjoyment at playing with an adult the improvement of intonation and tone production the liveliness of the lesson - I have composed three new concertinos inspired by the duet form.Taking three great keys for the violin - G D and A minor I have endeavoured to combine emotionally engaging and technically educational music in the 'Olden Style'. Teacher's Book 1-The Teacher's book includes a simple piano accompaniment with guitar chord symbols to accompany the pieces in Recorder Duets From The Beginning Pupil's Book 1.

Book I-The general plan of this method aims at a systematic rotation of playing fundamentals using new material in each case. Consequently eight or ten exercises are considered as a complete lesson including exercises for tone development articulation mechanism phrasing ensemble playing etc. I believe that this principle is sounder pedagogically than that of presenting many exercises of the same type in succession the superficial attractiveness of the latter notwithstanding. Every exercise or melody has been introduced for a purpose and in most cases that purpose has been stated. In any event however the teacher should take care that the student knows why theexercise was written. A small amount of practice with definite purpose is better than a great amount of 'wandering' on the instrument. The instrument range in this book is moderate. The few exercises that exceed the playing limit of a particular student may be omitted as the material for each new problem is adequate. The pupil-teacher duets can be played by two students as the range of the teacher's part is not prohibitive. Posture Holding the instrument breathing production of tone technical development the language of music and care of the instrument are topics treated in this book.
