Sonata da Chiesa for organ and wind orchestra is a work in three movements. The first movement presents three melodic lines which are developed in turn. The second movement introduces a theme by Johann Pachelbel followed by several variations on the theme - a technique favoured by Kees Schoonenbeek. The third movement is a neo-Baroque rondo which introduces thematic elements from the first movement. This is a work rich in colour and sound. The three movement Concerto da chiesa is the last organ work by Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984), composed a few months before his death. The premiere was performed by Clemens Ganz, then organist at the Cathedral of Cologne, in memory of the esteemed teacher and college colleague. The three-movement composition is an unmistakable 'Schroeder' work: emphasis of linearity according to high baroque standards, conciseness and sometimes impulsive gestures of the themes and rhythms, layers of parallel chords within a freely tonal modern harmony, not forgetting the plasticity of form and the motor functions which are surprisingly energetic for an eighty-year-old.

Sonata da chiesa III was commissioned by Petteri Pitko, who played the first perfor-mance in Kemionsaaren Musiikkijuhlat in the summer of 2016. The sonata has three movements, each of which has a definite liturgical character and a choral tune as a can-tus firmus. Hence the music can be performed either in a concert or as a part of liturgy. From the composer's foreword: The first movement, Kyrie, has got an introvert mood. The choral melody is veiled, an indirect part of arpeggiated texture. The Gloria is open, even brilliant: the cantus firmus is worked out to a virtuosic, dance-like texture. The third movement closes the music by means of polyphony and bird singing. Concerning the harpsichord, for me it is essen-tial not to use equal temperament: the possibility to play with pure or almost pure in-tervals is crucial to the sound, having very high and strong overtones. Jyrki Linjama composed Sonata da chiesa I for piano as a commission from the Carinthischer Sommer festival in Austria and premiered by Juho Pohjonen at Ossiach Abbey in summer 2010. The title alludes to the sonata tradition of the Baroque at its weightiest and most solemn. The polyphonic church sonata with its strict adherence to form for a long time occupied an important role in the liturgy (as distinct from the sonata da camera). Linjama’s modern application of this tradition articulates features of the liturgy: breathing, bells, shades of darkness and light. The closed Miserere of the opening movement opens out in the middle movements to let in light, which the angelic song of the last movement once again encloses in translucent twilight. The present edition contains Twelve Sonatas for Violin Solo and Basso Continuo, Op. 5 by Arcangelo Corelli. The first part of the series (Z. 12050: Sonatas No. 1-3, Z. 12051: Sonatas Nos. 4-6) comprises church sonatas (sonate da chiesa), while the second one (Z. 12265: Sonatas Nos. 7-12) chamber sonatas (sonate da camera). The present edition is based on the first edition of the work published in Rome in 1700. Much like a film score, Peter Kleine Schaars’ composition paints colourful images while telling the story of the Anglo-Saxon monk, Lebu nus. In around 768 AD, Lebu nus founded a mission in the Dutch province of Deventer in an effort to convert the Pagan Saxons. Contrasting themes describe the Ijssel Valley, the Saxons and Lebu nus, construction on the church and its subsequent destruction in a clash with the Saxons. The Ijssel-Valley-theme returns one more time in a minor key before each of the themes come together again for one rousing finale. Jan de Haan took as a starting point for Music for a Solemnity an old custom from the Dutch town of Hoogeveen, by which the faithful are called to church with drums. It was also inspired by the music of John Williams. This unusual combination has resulted in a solemn work in which old traditional methods are united with modern rhythms and melodic lines. Voor Music for a Solemnity liet Jan de Haan zich enerzijds inspireren door de eeuwenoude traditie in de Drentse stad Hoogeveen om met trommels tot de kerkgang op te roepen en anderzijds door de muziek van de succesvolle Amerikaansecomponist John Williams. Deze bijzondere combinatie resulteerde in een feestelijk werk met ritmische patronen en melodische lijnen die getuigen van respect voor Williams’ oeuvre.Zu Music for a Solemnity ließ sich der Komponist einerseits vom alten Brauch der niederländischen Stadt Hoogeveen, mit Trommeln zum Kirchgang zu rufen, und andererseits von der Musik von John Williams inspirieren. Diese ungewöhnliche Kombination mündete in ein festliches Werk, in welchem sich alte Tradition in schönster Weise mit modernen Rhythmen und melodischen Linien vereinen. Il y a quatre siècles, l’église de la ville d’Hoogeveen aux Pays-Bas n’avait pas de carillon. Les fidèles décidèrent de se rassembler pour le culte dominical au son d’un tambour. Aujourd’hui, Hoogeveen possède plusieurs carillons mais continue d’honorer cette tradition ancienne. Music for a Solemnity (Musique pour une occasion solennelle) est une oeuvre festive en hommage au tambour d’Hoogeveen. Les lignes mélodiques et les motifs rythmiques sont inspirés de la musique du célèbre compositeur américain John Williams qui Jan de Haan voue une grande admiration.Una composizione che riprende le vicende del villaggio olandese di Hoogeveen nel XVII secolo. Dato che la chiesa non aveva un campanile, fu deciso di utilizzare un tamburino per chiamare i cittadini a messa. Benché oggi la cittadina sia ricca di campane, Hoogeveen onora questa antica tradizione del tamburino. Music for a Solemnity è un brano festivo ispirato dal tamburino da un lato, ma anche dalla musica di John Williams, le cui linee melodiche e la scrittura ritmica influenzano da sempre Jan de Haan.
