On average, about eight thousand (mostly light) earthquakes occur worldwide each day. Composer Jan de Haan has always been fascinated by this natural phenomenon. Earthquake portrays the beautiful South-American peninsula, Isla Iberi which lies directly on a major fault line. The peace and tranquility is shattered by a major tremor and the terrified people flee in fear. In addition to showing the earthquakes destructive power, Earthquake also conveys the courage and faith of the industrious people of Isla Iberia, as they energetically start the reconstruction of their beloved residential area. Earthquake is dedicated to the memory of all victims of the devastating Asiantsunami which occurred on 26 December 2004.

The Norwest Arch (2011) was commissioned by the Christchurch Arts Festival as a memorial to the 181 people who died in the February 2011 Christchurch earthquake. It is a highly emotive work with its combination of sustained chords and simple melodic lines that pass between single instruments throughout the band. The work can be enhanced with poignant text about the earthquake that can be spoken at specific points. Farr's work can serve as a reflective highlight to any brass band programme.

Filadelfia is a small town in the province of Vibo Valentia in the southern Italian region of Calabria. In 1783 the town suffered a devastating earthquake. This work depicts the events before and after the disaster, and starts peacefully, with dance-like music sounding in the streets. After this the earthquake destroys everything, causing deep despair. In the end, the town is being rebuilt, which calls for a festive celebration! The composer writes:On March 11th 2011 a massive 9.0- magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of north-eastern Japan.I'm writing these programme notes barely a week later and the death toll caused by the quake and resulting tsunami already exceeds 6000, with thousands of people still unaccounted for. I have many friends associated with many bands throughout Japan and one of these, Yutaka Nishida, suggested I write a piece to raise money to help those affected by the disaster. I was immediately attracted by the idea and have arranged Cantilena (a brass band piece recently commissioned by the Grenland International Brass Festival, Norway) for wind band, giving it a new title tohonour my friends in the Land of the Rising Sun.I will be donating royalties from this piece to the Japanese Red Cross Society Emergency Relief Fund and am delighted to say that my distributors, De Haske, who will generously also donate all net profits from sales of this piece, have pledged a substantial advance payment to the Red Cross so that what little help this project generates can be immediate. It is my sincere wish that this 'Band Aid' project will allow wind bands around the world support the people of Japan, where bands are a way of life for many, in this difficult time.

Monsoon Toccata by Anthony Gilbert. 3'33; for solo piano. In memoriam Janet Owen Thomas (1961-2002). In 1988, Janet Owen Thomas met up with me in Sydney at the end of a short organ-recital tour - possibly her last before devoting herself entirely to composing. We returned to England together, doing a rapid circular tour of Northern India on the way. Alighting from the plane at Delhi we were hit by the whirling wind and torrential rain of the seasonal monsoon, and early the following morning there was also a minor earthquake. This experience determined the spirit of the music, and Northern Indian Raga determines the purely technical approach, with thequasi-improvisatory toccatalike textures acting as decoration to a slow-moving, widely-spaced modal top line which almost loses control of the overall shape at the mid-point - a reflection of the impact of those natural phenomena. This brilliant programmatic work from the pen of Rob Romeyn is an incredible display of beauty, sensitivity, emotion and vigorous intensity. The journey begins on the morning of the great 1868 Hawaii earthquake. Peaceful and beautiful sounds of the black sand beach of Punalu’u are heard as the sun rises. The music then develops, first with a statement of the traditional melody The Earth Is Our Mother to remind us to respect Mother Earth and be mindful of her incredible powers. As the tempo quickens we are musically transported into the events of the fateful day, as the earthquake and resulting Tsunami ensued. As the movement of the earth subsides, we return to the beach of Punalu’u as Mother Earth begins her renewal of new life. Certain to become a classic for concert and festival use, this is music of highest quality!

String Quartet No.3 was written for, and first performed by the Balanescu Quartet, February 1990 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London. Duration 16 minutes. Instrumental parts are available on sale. Quoting composer: In the summer of 1989 I composed a choral work, Out of the Ruins, for Agnieszka Piotrowska's BBC2 documentary which dealt with the physical and emotional responses of some inhabitants of Leninakhan to the earthquake which devastated Armenia the previous December. When he heard the recording of the work that I made with the Holy Echmiadzin Chorus under the fervent conducting of Khoren Meykhanejian, Alex Balanescu suggested turning Out of the Ruins into a string quartet. There seemed no reason or opportunity to do this until I felt the need to add to the intensity of my experiences in Armenia the no less profound experience of witnessing the images of the Romanian revolution on television during the later part of December 1989. The compositional procedure was as follows: to take Out of the Ruins as a template on which the Romanian vocal or instrumental music would be superimposed, quite often stretched into new intervallic shapes though the demands of the completely performed harmonic structure.

Of Spanish origin, the word temblor means tremor or earthquake. This composition for the developing concert band is as unstoppable as the natural disaster it embodies. Aggressive in nature, but with some well placed repose and a stunning maestoso climax, Temblor is bound to excite students and audiences alike.

Using several versions of the original work as inspiration, Zack Stachowski has arranged The Seven Last Words of Christ for solo instrument and piano, making Haydn’s music accessible to music ministers who may not have access to larger instrumental ensembles.  These prayerful meditations can be used as preludes, as music for reflection, or in ritual when singing is not permitted. Though the pieces are inspired by the Seven Last Words from the Cross and find their most obvious fit in the season of Lent and Holy Week, the diversity of color and character makes them suitable on other occasions throughout the entire year.  (Since these arrangements were envisioned as liturgy preludes or as instrumental pieces during ritual, Haydn’s original prelude and earthquake movements have been excluded due to their overtly dramatic and performative nature.)   .

In Poseidon, commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and Mstislav Rostropovich, Bergman turns to the Greek god of the sea and lord of the earthquake as a symbol for primaeval power and the wellspring of creativity. In the ocean depths - the subconscious - power stirs and rises to the threshold of consciousness. It projects itself into the second movement's eruption of energy, after which follows recovery and calm. Composed in 1992.

Joseph Haydn's oratorio Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlosers am Kreuze is probably one of the most frequently performed settings of music for Good Friday. Haydn set these Seven Words in a dramatic, extremely gripping emotional style which is utterly compelling. Originally the work was conceived as a purely instrumental composition - as meditative music in seven slow movements with an introduction and concluding movement (Il Terremoto - the earthquake) for a Passiontide church service. From the outset, Haydn had composed the themes of the movements with a vocal spirit in mind, so when he heard a vocal arrangement of his work in 1794 in Passau with a German singing text - an obvious idea - it inspired him to write his own vocal version. The first performance took place in 1796 in Vienna. With the flourishing of choral societies in the 19th century, this vocal version of the Seven Words became one of the most frequently-performed Passion music settings of all. The critical Urtext edition of the work now published offers a revised musical text reflecting current scholarly standards.

The ambitious late work of Georg Philipp Telemann, consciously dedicated to vocal composition, begins with the Donner-Ode (1756/1760). As a symbol thunder represents the forces of nature, here in close connection to the traumatic earthquake of Lisbon in 1755. The characteristic arrangement of the vocal parts and the scoring with three trumpets, the soloistic use of the timpani and instrumental ensemble made this avant-garde work popular and well known already during the composer's lifetime. The new edition presented here takes into consideration important, newly discovered sources such as the autograph of the first part. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3914200.

Great Baroque church music full of color and powerful imagery! Sing to the Lord a new song! Sing, rejoice and praise his holy name with the trumpets and cornetts! And nature shall join in, the seas shall rage, and the whole world and the rushing waters rejoice. This is such an ideal text for Telemann: The voices rejoice and praise together with the horns, harp, and trombones; and the choir and instruments make the sea roar, the earthquake tremble and the rivers and mountains exult. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3914000.
