Following the huge success of their instrumental method Look, Listen & Learn, Michiel Oldenkamp and Jaap Kastelein have focussed their attention on school bands and devised a completely new method that can be used in both instrumental lessons and class bands or wind ensembles.
Learning Music Together is the new method for young wind players and percussionists, aged eight and above.
Learning Music Together has been developed in close collaboration with professionals from the class band world, music schools, and academies in the Netherlands and Germany.
Learning Music Together combines instrumental lessons with a course for class band. The trombone lessons offer trombone -specific items such as new notes and technical exercises while at the same time supporting the learning of the class band, with a focus on rhythm, melodic structure and playing music together. The method consists of two volumes. Volume One introduces the first instrumental notes in unison and then develops part-playing with duets. Volume Two builds on the skills taught in the first volume and introduces pieces in three parts. In addition, supplementary material is available on the extensive website, e.g. demo- and accompaniment tracks for all pieces, additional pieces of music (well-known songs) and video tutorials. Learning Music Together is logically structured and illustrated in a child-friendly way - a perfect combination for young musicians!

Here is a description of Warming Up Together from the composer, Andrew Friedrichs: Warming Up Together is a book of duets that are designed to provide a musical context as well as a focus on specific areas of technique. There are eight sections in this book that correspond to what I feel are the most fundamental components of trombone technique: tone (long tones), flexibility (slow slurs, wide slurs, and fast slurs), range (high range and low range), and articulation (slow articulation and fast articulation). The idea for this book came out of my own warm up. I was trying to develop a warm up routine that was a series of technical categories rather than a series of exercises, but I also wanted to have the opportunity to be able to play it with someone else. As a trombone player and teacher, I have made specific choices within the duets based on technical challenges that I've observed in my own playing and in the playing of students and colleagues. As a composer, I've focused on addressing various styles in order to keep the duets fun and fresh while allowing the musical contexts to be as far reaching as possible in their application. As a not-to-be-taken-seriously backrow member of the orchestra, I've thrown in the critical element of terrible humor by way of pathetic jokes and ignominious puns.

Concert Duets is a collection of 14 arrangements of works by prominent 18th-century composers, mostly taken from Trio Sonatas. Duet 11 is a Jim Self original work in the Rococo style; and Duets 12, 13 and 14 are arrangements of the three-movements of the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. Included with this edition are play-along recorded tracks by tubist Zach Collins, who also served as editor of the current edition.I created these duets as Christmas gifts for my tuba playing friends, with the first duet being arranged in 1976. All 14 of the duets are challenging and fun to play and are especially effective as concert pieces. As a young musician I had the privilege of playing duets with many of the world’s finest tubists including Harvey Phillips, John Fletcher, Bob Pallansch, Chester, Schmitz, Dan Perantoni, Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop, Winston Morris and Tommy Johnson. I learned more about playing music in these duo sessions than from any other musical activity I have ever experienced. Duets are powerful teaching tools for learning and mastering rhythm, phrasing and intonation and for developing overall musicianship.Jim Self:Self (b. 1943) is a Los Angeles free-lance musician, a veteran of thousands of Hollywood motion pictures, television shows and records, and tuba soloist on many prominent movies.
