Commissioned by the Maryknoll Community to celebrate its centenary of papal approval in 2011, Missa ad Gentes was composed with a particular vision – to create a Mass setting with the 2010 revised English texts representing both Maryknoll’s United States heritage as well as the diverse cultures in which Maryknoll missioners serve in Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.  With each piece of the Mass, Fr. Joncas honors the musical heritage of a different culture, creating a truly unique setting celebrating the Church’s diversity. The title, meaning “Mass ‘to the peoples’†draws on the text of the Second Vatican Council’s document on missionary activities. “It is my hope that the Missa ad Gentes will assist English-speaking Roman Rite Catholics to worship with new liturgical texts, faithful to their heritage but enriched by the great diversity of languages and cultures that make up the Church Catholic.†-Michael Joncas.

The Graduale pro omne tempore Eja gentes was discovered in a contemporary manuscript copy at the Lower Austrian pilgrimage basilica Sonntagberg. Joseph Haydn is named as the composer of this festive motet, very suitable for combination with classical Mass settings at services and concerts. The use of the organ as a solo instrument gives the work a particularly attractive character. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5039800.

Uniting beauty and simplicity, Laudate Omnes Gentes comes from the heart of the Taizé Community as it brings together well-known songs by Jacques Berthier and more recent songs composed by brothers of the Community. Listeners will be enchanted by the gloriously delicate choral sound, recorded at the twelfth-century village church at Taizé. Using a small group of just sixteen singers and five instrumentalists, the aim of this recording is to encourage smaller groups to use music during their meetings. Simply a gorgeous collection of favorites!  .

Omnes Gentes Plaudite by Giovanni is a 16-part vocal motet in 4 choirs that has been transcribed for Trombone choir by Russell McKinney. As with most of Gabrieli's works, there is a stereophonic effect produced by separating the choirs in the hall. Each choir has its opportunity to sound the melody, followed by the others choirs, augmenting the previous effect even more. This 4-minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

In this occasionally unusual, expressive work, Cherubini sensitively follows the drama of the psalm texts, on which the work is based. In concert the work is suitable as an impressive pendant to the masses and requiem settings of Cherubini, Haydn, or Mozart, and also in combination with the great sacred works of the 19th century.

Antonio Vivaldi composed not only instrumental music, but also vocal music with equal sensitivity and enjoyment for the girls at the Ospedale della Pieta in Venice. The Laudate Dominum RV 606 dates from this period. This choral piece is simple and homophonic, but through multiple modulations into distant keys it acquires its own very special charm. Accents are placed in typically Vivaldian style, individual words emphasized, and the venerable psalm text is accordingly given a new kind of meaning by the composer.
