Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Elegiac Song in memory of Eleonore Pasqualati, the wife of his long-standing friend and patron Johann Baptist Freiherr von Pasqualati zu Osterberg, who died young. The short choral piece, alternating between quiet pain and drama and with a discreet string accompaniment, was published for the first time in 1826. In addition to the vocal and string parts, there is a piano part which can be used as an alternative to the strings. This piano part is used as the basis of the Carus vocal score. Study score to Bent Sorensen's Adieu for String Quartet. The slow choral-like music which initiates Adieu was the result of an image or almost a dream that I had. Without being able to explain why, I imagined a procession of people, maybe medieval monks, wearing large gray mantles with Ku-Klux-Klan-like white cowls on their heads, something like a funeral procession. The title Adieu is partly a comment on this funeral procession, but also used because the piece is split up by three slow-ascending glissandi, a kind of farewell glissandi which removes the intervening music. The first absorbing glissando is soft and removes both the slow funeral choral and the agitating figures in the first half of the piece. The second glissando is given only to the cello and crawls out from the elegiac melodies in the middle part. The third and final glissando is intense and agitating, and prepares the way for the end of the piece. This end primarily deals with the relationship fast - slow. This relationship is turned topsy turvy: the music gets faster and faster until it is so fast that it suddenly becomes slow, so slow in fact that it is very quickly able to become extremely fast again. The Prelude, Hymn And Toccata 1987 is dedicated to, and was commissioned by the Nettle-Markham Piano Duo. It was the second work to have been written for them by the composer, the first being the Sonata For Piano Duet Op.92. This twenty minute work begins with Leighton's typical preludial double-dotted rhythms and contrapuntal textures; it develops into dark, passionate music and erupts into single and double cadenzas. The gentle Hymn is ushered in quietly and unfolds in long, rhapsodic sections, building up to more climactic cadenzas before dissolving gradually to an ethereal conclusion. The Toccata finale shows Leighton's masterly piano writing and contrasts biting, rhythmic motifs with sweeping, yearning elegiac phrases.

Performance time - ca. 4:30Originally written for concert band (and commissioned by the U.S. Marine Band), Esprit de Corps is a fantasy-march that serves as a tribute to both the Marine Corps and the Marine Band. Composed immediately after the 1983 bombing of the Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon, the composer chose to forego an elegiac tribute in favor of a work that reflects the positive spirit of the Corps, full of energy and dynamism. Even the tempo marking, ?Tempo di Bourgeois,? reflects the dramatic and spirited conducting of Col. John R. Bourgeois, conductor of the Marine Band at the time of composition.

In 1880, Edvard Grieg composed twelve song poems by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje. He arranged two of these songs for String Orchestra published under the title of Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34. These two deeply meloncholy pieces were titled The Wounded Heart and Last Spring. The latter of these two titles inspired Tohru Takahashi to produce this expressive and sensitive transcription for Concert Band, which will make a fantastic encore piece for any concert. Last Spring komt uit de Two Elegiac Melodies for String Orchestra, opus 34. Deze muziek, gecomponeerd in 1880, is oorspronkelijk geschreven voor twee liederen uit Grieg's album opus 33: The Wounded Heart en Spring.De laatste van deze twee titels inspireerde Tohru Takahashi tot het maken van een prachtige transcriptie die heel geschikt is als toegift.
