Elijah (Vocal Score) - Novello Edition

Mendelssohn’s Elijah is an oratorio for SATB soli SATB chorus orchestra and organ with the text derived from the Lutheran Bible by Julius Schubring. The English version of the text was translated by William Bartholemew.This New Novello Choral Edition of the vocal score contains comprehensive performance notes and detailed editorial markings and suggestions as edited by Michael Pilkington. The German text is also included in the vocal score and a German translation of the performance notes is also provided.

In writing Elijah Mendelssohn paid musical tribute to his two musical heroes Bach and Handel to which he added his own lyricism and Orchestral colour blending in Elijah elements of the Baroque and his own early Romanticism. He set the scenes of the prophet Elijah’s life in the most dramatic terms. While the oratorio immediately gained enormous popularity it has not retained the same frequency of performance in modern times though its power and beauty are undiminished.This sheet music includes thorough historical notes.

The prologue to British composer Edward Elgar’s famous oratorio The Apostles is now available arranged for a Chorus of Soprano Alto Tenor and Bass with a Piano transcription of the original Orchestral accompaniment. The edition features a 15-bar instrumental Piano introduction as well as solo parts for Soprano throughout.The oratorio depicts the disciples of Jesus and their reactions to the extraordinary events they witness. Just as for the rest of the libretto the verses in The Spirit Of The Lord Is Upon Me have been assembled directly from the Bible by Elgar. This has been the pattern for many of the mostinfluential oratorios throughout history including Handel's Messiah (1741) and Mendelssohn's Elijah (1836).
