Here is a book of tunes from the Elizabethan era - the great period of English song - set in tablature for the clawhammer banjo. At first glance, it is true, the songs of Shakespeare's day and the mountain banjo seem to be worlds apart. But the musical traditions are, in fact, related, as Elizabethan songs are the old world cousins of mountain tunes. As a result, Elizabethan tunes are a natural way to extend the mountain banjo repertoire for intermediate and advanced players. Their pedigree, their modal feel, the lilting rhythms, and the ease with which they can be adapted to the banjo argue the case. At the same time, they open the possibility for new sounds - in particular new rhythms - for the old instrument, pushing the banjo beyond unnatural limitations and giving it a new voice. Songs from Shakespeare's plays consist of songs whose texts were written by William Shakespeare: popular songs and ballads quoted or referred to by characters in the plays: songs of contemporary poets and musicians: and popular songs, folk songs, ballads, rounds and street cries known to have been current at the time and included to add to the overall setting in which Shakespeare wrote and performed. This is a practical, useful, and informal book, making no pretense to prove anything except, as editor Tom Kines says, that the songmakers of Shakespeare's time were a skillful lot and the combination of the golden flow of poesy with the silver flood of melody and harmony will perhaps never again be equalled.

Book 2-The two books contain some 100 songs chosen from the definitive collections of The English Lutenists begun by Edmund Fellowes revised by Thurston Dart and added to by later scholars. They include many favourites and many lesser-known songs by popular composers such as Dowland Campion and Pilkington (no known ancestor of the compiler) as well as some unjustly forgotten such as Corkine Attey and Ferrabosco. Nearly all are for middle-range voice with lute parts transcribed in staff notation. The books have an appropriate preface and a commentary on the words which often throw a penetrating light on Elizabethan and Jacobean life.

For Violin And Piano-Commissioned to create folk song arrangements Adler chose two compelling Southern Appalachian folk songs brought to our shores by English immigrants and having origins in Elizabethan times. Married and Single Life is a slow dance while Brennan on the Moor recalling the location in Britain and transplanting it to Virginia is a reel - a rambunctious dance constantly changing partners always keeping on dancing until the participants fall exhausted. Both of these short movements are variations on the original tune which is heard in its entirety at least once in the piece.
