With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the sailing age. It was during the 16th to the mid-19th century where large sailing vessels dominated global exploration, international trade, and naval warfare. The piece's compound meter provides the pulse of movement as it pitches and rolls with the rhythm of the waves. The driving main melodies convey the determination and courage of the explorers and their crew. Dissonant harmonies suggest rough seas, turbulent weather, and other constant dangers that sailors must endure. Finally, the ending sweeping melody and climax reflects the joy and triumph at arriving on a new land at the apex of a long and intense voyage. With evidence of watercraft dating back to 8000 BC, travel by water has remained an important aspect of life to many civilizations. From paddling down a river or crossing a large lake, to steaming across an entire ocean, generations of humans have traveled on water to explore foreign lands, to seek food and precious materials, to move and trade cargo, and to attack and fend off enemies. With Wind and Water is a musical portrayal of an adventure on the high seas during the age of sail. “The farewell / Vienna, May 4, 1809 / on the departure of his Imperial Highness the revered Archduke Rudolph†– Beethoven added this inscription to the manuscript of this sonata. It is today know by its French title les Adieux and numbers amongst the composer's best-loved piano works. The first movement of the sonata was presumably written directly before the archduke hurriedly left Vienna. Rudolph and other members of the imperial family fled to Hungary to avoid having to endure the French troops' siege and conquest. On his return in January 1810, Beethoven was able to present him with the complete sonata, having written not only the “farewell,†but also “absence†and “return.â€.

Come and See is an invitation for each of us to experience Jesus as He enters Jerusalem; to witness His betrayal by a friend; to endure with Him the suffering and death of a sinless Savior; and finally to behold His empty tomb. Through the eyes of a blind beggar, we're taken through these events and more by way of a powerful and moving dramatic script, and energetic choral arrangements carefully designed for smaller choirs by two-time Dove Award winning writers, Dennis and Nan Allen. With a run time of 36 minutes, this dramatic musical includes popular worship songs Come and See and Sing to the King and the classic Wayne Watson song Friend of a Wounded Heart. Also included is a beautiful arrangement of the hymn I Saw the Cross and a new tune to the great hymn text Beneath the Cross of Jesus. Musically, this work is highlighted by settings that any choir can comfortably attain. Several opportunities for congregational involvement are included. For the full drama version, a small cast is required, and Nan Allen has written creative and very useful production notes to assist in both staging and costuming. The narrator version requires two narrators and is equally moving. This Easter, come and see what Jesus did for you.

It is natural as we age to contemplate the finality of passing on, if not personally, then certainly as an effect from others around you whom have left this space. Having to endure the passing of family and friends is of course very trying. This is especially true when the perception is that someone passed before their time though there are those of us who believe in fate implying that the Force works in its own mysterious way. Composers often commemorate passings with music as a means to mourn and as well to celebrate the life of an individual who meant something to them. Such is the nature of this piece. Movement 1---Past uses as source material themes I wrote for my mother Frances and father Leo when they passed; movement 2---Present centers around a choral (Prayer for Mike) I wrote for my dear friend, saxophonist Michael Brecker when he passed a few years ago. This same period also saw the passing of other friends and associates whom I had known for years, all way too premature, beginning with JF Jenny Clarke and Bob Berg, Hans Gruber, Thomas Stowsand, David Baker, James Williams, Dennis Irwin, John Stubblefield. The final movement---Future is a requiem of sorts for all of us still here. With its improvisational character, it is meant to suggest the positive implications of living life to its fullest. Titles: Past * Present * Future.

I love classic literature and movies based on the classics. Great plot lines, complex characters, and the power of love across social and economic boundaries displayed in multilayered stories. (And, of course, the corsets and crinoline.) Recent TV series like Netflix’s Bridgerton have succeeded in bringing these kinds of stories back to mainstream audiences, illustrating that their universal themes endure even today. Each sung monologue in LOVE AND LONGING is drawn from a climactic moment in a work of classic literature. “Whatever our souls are made of†contrasts Cathy’s frozen commitments to social expectation and detached feelings toward her fiancé Edgar Linton with her overwhelming love for Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights. In “Mr. Rochester,†Jane Eyre declares her feelings for her employer with uncommon familiarity and boldness. Finally, Mr. Darcy’s proposal to Elizabeth in Pride and Prejudice is reimagined with a Gilbert and Sullivan-like rhyme scheme, as Darcy humorously enumerates the reasons it would be foolish and improper for him to marryElizabeth, while asking for her hand. The first two texts are taken almost verbatim from passages in the novels, while the lyrics for “Darcy Proposes†are original, freely adapted from several passages.LOVE AND LONGING was conceived as a single work in three parts, to be performed in succession by three different singers. However, performances of the set by two singers instead of three, or of monologues as standalone pieces, are also permissible. The parts were originally written for soprano, mezzo-soprano, and baritone respectively, with alternate versions for mezzo-soprano, soprano, and tenor added later. These arias are well within reach for college students and young professionals, and draw on multiple musical traditions. Performer’s interpretations of the monologues will of course be enriched by reading the novels, and by watching the movies they inspired.

Mary McDonald’s arrangement of “Walking in Sunlight†will be sure to put spring in anyone’s step. Spirited lines and warm harmonies endure as the choir is “singing His praises†from beginning to end. The spirited accompaniment can be augmented with the addition of the optional rhythm score by Stan Pethel.

In a world where food is rationed based on wealth and status, people experiencing poverty have formed a task force to gain equality. Insurgence, by Rossano Galante, begins with a driving, rhythmic ostinato in the winds, low brass, and percussion. Soaring, aggressive horn lines take the lead in this post-apocalyptic setting. This theme is passed to the trumpets, then the winds, heralding their presence in this work. The piece transitions to a slightly lyrical section, capturing the pain and struggle these humans must endure during these challenging times. The piece recapitulates the main theme with the full ensemble, bringing this composition to a thunderous conclusion. (3:30).

'The piece has been written for Edna Michell's Compassion project. In the composition I follow the idea of a dialogue, suggested by the text I have chosen. The intimate nature and fragile sound world of the duo mirror the fragility of our uncertain existence.' - Kaija Saariaho Light and darkness, night and day. We marvel at the mystery of the stars. Moon and sky, sand and sea. We marvel at the mystery of the sun. Twilight, high noon, dusk and dawn. Though we are mortal, we are Creation's crown. Flesh and bone, steel and stone. We dwell in fragile, temporary shelters. Grant steadfast love, compassion, grace. Sustain us, Lord; our origin is dust. Splendor, mercy, majesty, love endure. We are but little lower than the angels. Resplendent skies, sunset, sunrise. The grandeur of Creation lifts our lives. Evening darkness, morning dawn.

He lived in the shadow of death, painfully aware of the tuberculosis that would kill him prematurely. But Frédéric Chopin attained immortality with his piano works, which endure as pinnacles of the instrument's repertoire. This biography by one of the nineteenth century's foremost pianists--Chopin's friend and fellow artist, Franz Liszt--offers a highly informed assessment of the Polish composer's musical legacy.

Rosa Gallica has been written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The work focuses largely on France as a lot of the fighting took place there. With the title Rosa Gallica (French rose), the composer wishes to emphasize the poetic image of the rose. The stem represents the years gone by - such as those taken up by the First World War - and the thorns refer to the conflict and the pain that the victims had to endure. The rose itself forms the picture of beauty - and symbolizes opening up to a peaceful world. The piece depicts France from the end of the 19th century through to its role at the heart of the First World War and beyond. A spectacular and dramatic new work by Jacob de Haan.
