Richard Reed Parry's Heart And Breath Sextet for Piano Six-hands Violin Viola and Violoncello.Heart And Breath Sextet was commissioned by the 2011 MusicNOW Festival foryMusic.'This piece is based around the idea of using the widely varying internal rhythms of the performers? bodies as performance parameters. There is no actual tempo or meter built into the piece. The breathing ratesof the players are used in alternation with the individualperformers? heart rates to determine the pace at which all of the musical material is played. This requires that the performers generally play quietly and delicately so asto be able to hear their heartbeats adequately. This in combination with the natural variance between the different heart rates results in a kind of delicate musical ?pointillism?: starts and stops which are somewhat staggered parts which repeatedly line up and fall out of synch with each other different individuals? pulses rising and falling. The piece is never performed exactly the same way twice.In this piece the pianists wear stethoscopespositioned over their hearts so that each can follow his or her own heart rate. Two eighth notes (quavers) correspond to the two sounds of a single normal heartbeat and performers should match as closely as possible the staccatoand irregular rhythm they hear. The strings are instructed to ?play to breath?; the natural cycle of one inhalation and one exhalation or vice versa will determine the length of the bar (two quarter notes/crotchets) without anyattempt to make it metronomic. When one instrument is designated the leader their breath will determine the starts of phrases and the procession from one bar to the next cuing other parts if necessary.' - RichardReed Parry

POD-Nico Muhly's Stabat Mater Dolorosa for Soprano Baritone and Ensemble. Parts. My Stabat Mater is a very simply-constructed piece of music. I knew I wanted to write a duet a piece of religious music and something to go along with a bit of Birtwistle. My initial instinct was to base the piece on drones as Birtwistle's music has so very many notes but then I decided that an austere but ecstatic approach was the best to fill a coherent evening. I asked my friend Craig Lucas to paraphrase the Stabat Mater text - which describes the Virgin Mary weeping at the foot of the cross on which her son is crucified. The piece is organised byseparating each phrase of the text with a moment of silence with the exception of the last three which are joined with a frenzied chorale with improvised dynamics from the Harp Wind and Strings. - Nico Muhly Instrumentation: Soprano and Baritone voice Flute Clarinet in Bb Harp Violin Viola and Violoncello.

Par MILLER DONALD. These books are arranged to be performed with various combinations of instruments. This volume presents some of the most beloved repertoire for the Christmas season. Some works are well known, others will sound fresh and new to most players. The pieces may be performed as a solo for each instrument (Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola or Cello) with piano accompaniment, or as duets or trios, as well as full orchestra. If performed with full orchestra, the piano accompaniment should not be used. The string ensemble series meets all standards for ASTA (American String Teachers Association) and Suzuki Association of the Americas, Inc. If performed with full orchestra, no solo parts should be played except the 1st violin part. Note also, if you wish to perform these works with full orchestra and you are short certain instruments, you still have some flexibility with the score. For example, if there are not enough violas for balance, the viola (harmony part) and 3rd violin part are identical. Judith Weir: My Piano Quartet (2000) is part of an extended series of works for piano and strings which I have written over the last twenty years - although I didn¹t know it was going to be a series when I wrote the first of these works Music for 247 Strings in 1980. During this period it has been far more usual for composers to write for mixed wind and string ensembles. But I continued (and still continue) to be fascinated by the potential of strings and piano; particularly the chance to write for the instruments as soloists or as a group and often to use both these options simultaneously.String Parts.Premiered July 2000 at the Cheltenham Festival by the SchubertEnsemble.Piano Score available: CH61794
