In this unique and unusual piece Ernest Bloch reflects the style of French dramatist novelist essayist art historian and mystic Romaine Rolland to whom Psaume 22 is dedicated. Originally written in 1914 for Baritone solo and Grand Orchestra this edition presents the composer’s reduction for Voice and Piano. The virtuoso Piano accompaniment is demanding for pianist and soloist alike but when mastered the piece yields a sound that is out of this world. The text of the psalm is provided in French (in d’Edmond Fleg’s translation) and English (as translated by Waldo Frank).
