Evening Waterfall comes from a cycle of eleven a cappella choral pieces derived from Early Moon, a collection of poetry by Carl Sandburg. The images in these simple, direct lyrics have a depth and resonance that all but cry outfor musical expression. Evening Waterfall is one of the easiest, certainly the most diatonic, of the Early Moon pieces. Imagine yourself, or perhaps, your childhood self, sitting in a tree or lying on the grass in the gloaming ofa summer's evening. The sounds of birds, the feel of wind on your skin, the sight of early stars: all seem to conspire to give you a name...to call you by your real name. But such knowledge--a kind of certainty about one's selfand place--is ephemeral. It cannot be willed to appear, or to stay. We are left alone, wondering what was the name you called me? and why did you go so soon?

Solstice Sonata (2013) for trumpet and organ was commissioned by the American Guild of Organists for its 2014 Biennial National Convention in Boston, Massachusetts. It was premiered on June 24, 2014 at the Memorial Church, Harvard University, by trumpeter Chris Gekker and organist Christian Lane. At the solstice (summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern), the sun is directly aligned with the tropical latitude lines, and the longest day of the year occurs (marking the start of summer). This sonata is music of celebration and contemplation, taking the inspiration of the longest day as a starting place for both meditation both thoughtful and joyous. Take Flight soars and leaps with vigor-perhaps the image of a hang-glider's journey over a dramatic landscape under the late evening sun. The Dream of Peace is lyrical and passionate; it is perhaps night music of reflection and intensity. Glittering, Aglow begins with quiet, mystical music: a gradual awakening. I have used melodic segments from the Farinelli arias that are still extant today, as well as other Baroque vocal and formal elements, models inspired by the Singspiel and the musical, and even a rap piece over a techno rhythm. The musical center of the opera consists of song and the human voice. Farinelli is a bel canto opera. (Siegfried Matthus) Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, was the brightest star among the castrato tenors of the 18th century. Handels enemies brought him to London so that he could outshine Handels singers. Here, Matthus depicts Farinelli at the Spanish court, ruled by the pathologically melancholy King Philip V. In a review of his life, we relive important stages in the career of the singer, who lived outside of the norm and found his home in the fascinating twilight world between art and artificiality.World premiere: Netzeband, July 12, 1997.
