Traditional church Organs are no longer the exclusive domain of Bach and the like - popular styles have conquered the “king of instruments” and found wide-ranging forms of expression. The only thing missing to date is a broad selection of suitable pieces. This is where Jazz Inspirations For Organ steps in. This comprehensive collection of moderately difficult pieces by various composers and organists offers “classical” swing jazz blues and Latin numbers side by side with rumba ragtime and calypso. A chorale prelude on Silent Night rubs shoulders with a Swing Fughetta and Latin for Lefties. The collection's great attraction lies in its personal treatment of the various themes. The editors are experienced organists fully conversant with the timbral possibilities of the pipe Organ. Their suggestions regarding registration are valuable tips that allow organists to develop their own style and be creative.

from the Opera 'Tannhauser'-During his time in Weimar (1848 1861) Liszt developed a then entirely new organ style which stands out for both orchestral and pianistic elements. Together with the choirmaster Alexander Wilhelm Gottschalg (1827 1908) from Tiefurt he regularly initiated so-called 'organ conferences'. And it was at the suggestion of Gottschalg that the present arrangement of the Pilgrim's Choir from the opera 'Tannhäuser' was written. With his version for organ Liszt by means of this example laid the foundations for the (not always undisputed) tradition extending to the present day of organ transcriptions from the operas of Wagner. 'Organistic' elements in the Pilgrims' Choir are theclassical chorale theme the solemn 'sacred' atmosphere of the solemn tempo as well as the expressive cantability. The linear intensification from the antiphonal-organ-like piano dolce of the beginning to the 'full organ' can be realized in a convincing manner with an orchestrally conceived three-manual organ with the sensitive use of the swell box and the successive seamless build-up of the crescendo pedal being of particular significance. Important repertoire piece marking the 200th birthday of Richard Wagner in 2013.

The Homage to Handel for Organ was composed ‘as an expression of thanks for having been elected as an honorary member of the Royal College of Organists in 1914. Karg-Elert responded to the honour with this work calling on inspiration from a composer ‘whom both England and German claim as their own’ at the time of the commencement of hostilities between the two nations. Sigfrid Karg-Elert was a German composer active in the early twentieth century whose broad output is eclipsed almost entirely by his works for harmonium and Organ instruments for which he was a gifted and prolific composer. His Organ works include the highly regarded Sixty-six Choral Improvisations andTwenty Choral Preludes and Postludes among others. Many of his works are active in Organ repertoire.

With virtuosic orchestration Mussorgsky depicts a demonic witches? sabbath on St John?s Night on the Triglav mountain. Zsigmond Szathmáry (b. 1939) the internationally-known concert organist has reworked the music of this symphonic poem to create a new work which puts the sound possibilities of the concert organ fully to the test. Rakugo or ‘fallen words’ is a traditional form of Japanese entertainment performed by a lone seated storyteller (rakugoka) with very few props if any at all. The complications of each story its dramatic arc characterizations and plot turns are expressed using extremely minimal means relying on the verbal talents of the rakugoka to maintain interest. This idea is explored in this work for solo organ by Tarik O'Regan: Fallen Words. The piece uses a simple pedal-like thread from start to finish around which is woven the performer’s ‘story’. Stephen Farr in the March/April 2015 issue of Choir and OrganMagazine suggests that a 'good performance' of Fallen Words 'will be hypnotic' and 'the ability of the performer to engage an audience with the most subtle of nuances is of crucial importance.'

Entirely different in mood from the nervous energy of the Rhapsody Prelude de Profundis expresses the call ‘from the depths’.Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. He left a body of distinguished Organ music of which these two works are fine examples. Howells’s first three rhapsodies for Organ were published together during the years of the first World War. It was not until forty years later that Howells returned to the form until although it shares many structural similarities with the earlier works.

Toccata and Lament was composed on commission in 2008 to inaugurate the large new organ in the Christ Church Cathedral Rochester NY USA. This instrument is a detailed reconstruction of a late Baroque organ of 1776 from Vilnius in Lithuania. The point of departure a clash of contrasting eras and musical cultures on two continents already bodes excitement. Martin Herchenröder a composer and professor of music theory has incorporated these contrasts in his roughly eight-minute composition. The result is a musical idiom of rare distinction universal in its musical resources and alternating between tonal triads and extremely dissonant clusters. The heart of the pieceis a dirge which using the Baroque doctrine of the affections relates to Eastern European cultural history in and around Vilnius a history marked by the predations of 20th-Century war.Expressive and effective contemporary organ musicAmalgam of musical traditions from the 18th to 21st CenturyExplanatory foreword by the composer (Ger/Eng)

The Last Judgment is a through-composed symphonic tableau that follows the structure of the text of Matthew underlining it in a figuralistic manner. Other scriptural references are also to be found: an image of the sun that turns dark (Acts of the Apostles 2: 20) and before the gathering of the nations twelve chords representing the thrones for the judgment of the twelve tribes of Israel (Matthew 19: 28). The thematic material combines original figures with Gregorian chant: the Gloria from the Missa de Angelis; the Alleluia of the Epiphany; Dies irae the sequence from the Requiem Mass; In paradisum theburial antiphon. The sections in recitative style follow the declamatory rhythm of the corresponding verses in Arabic the composer’s mother tongue. Finally the registration requires a symphonic style organ such as the Goll organ in Memmingen Germany at which the composer prepared the orchestral expression of this work.

The B.A.C.H. motif has been known and used for centuries but enjoyed a great revival in the late 19th century as composers paid homage to the composer J.S. Bach. It derives from the German nomenclature and is expressed in standard notation as Bb-A-C-B. The Fantasia And Fugue On B.A.C.H. is one of the most famous Organ works of Franz Liszt (1811-1886). The piece was intended for the inauguration of the famous Ladegast Organ at Merseburg Cathedral but sadly it wasn’t finished in time. Liszt then revised the work in 1870 and produced the version that survives today. A well-loved piece no organist’s library iscomplete without it.

David Bednall's Fanfare-Processional for Organ. Composed 2010. 'A work that reflects a constant revivification of tradition - most notably in the expected treatment of D major tonality (not fully resolved at the end) - this brilliantly effective piece successfully combines the essence of a church procession with elation: the tempo is relatively (but only relatively) slow the musical expression being of a positive character making a modem recessional as if preparing to leave the church before breathing in fresh open air in the concluding section. Bednall's work is extremely well written technically; it would make an exciting effecton any uplifting occasion.' - James Palmer
