'Valet will ich dir geben - Du arge, falsche Welt' Based on the sacred poem of Valerius Herberger and written in the style of Melchior Teschner's chorale melody, the French composer Naji Hakim (*1955) wrote a moving work for choir and organ. The five chorale variations lead from heavenly joy in the choral parts to a charming setting for solo organ; then Hakim moves on to a setting for a cappella choir and a canon for soprano and alto with organ accompaniment. The expressive work ends with a lively toccata which is complemented by an expressive adagio in the middle.

This toccata is based on the introit to the Christian Epiphany festival and solemnly announces the appearance of the Lord. As a toccata, the work is an introduction to Hakim's Adoration (Schott, ED 22614) for voice, flute and organ, a paraphrase of the first three introitus to Epiphany. The Toccata develops a series of symphonic variations with virtuoso movements that emphasize the expressiveness of the words of the Gregorian text: Ecce advenit dominator dominus: et regnum in manu ejus, et potestas, et empium. Deus, judicium tuum regi da: et justitiam tuam Filio regis. (Behold, the Lord, the ruler, comes: and the kingdom is in his hand, and the power and the dominion. God, give your judicial office to the king: and yours Justice to the son of the king.) (Malachi 3: 1, I Chronicles 29:12, Psalm 71: 1, 10, 11).

These 4 Préludes for flute (treble [alto] recorder or txistu in f) and piano are originally written for txistu and follow the ambitus of the Basque instrument. The initial Prélude, Allegro, is marked by its joyous character, its aksak rhythm (3+3+2), its generous modulations and its uninterrupted flow in the spirit of the Humoresque. The second Prélude, Moderato, is distinguished by asofter expression, a principle of ornamental variation, combined with a search for tonal diversity. The third Prélude, also Moderato, is in ternary rhythm with long expressive melodic lines accompanied by chords in amphibraque rhythm. The conclusive Prestois a saltarello developed in a game of tight modulations.

This fantasy in song form, develops an expressive melody in Eb minor. Its characteristic iambic rhythm is announced in the initial bars of the ostinato piano accompaniment. The central section contrasts by its diversified themes and its tonal mobility. A tight recapitulation in the treble register is dramatically interrupted before the coda. Collected and harmonically dense, the last bars resound like a last breath, tone painting the 'in manus tuas domine commendo spiritum meum' (Ps. 31,6).
