As with many other libretti by Pietro Metastasio, “Ezio†was also set to music several times – besides Handel, by Nicola Porpora in 1728 and Christoph Willibald Gluck in 1750. As the historical events from late antiquity surrounding the Western Roman General Aëtius, who had defeated the Huns under Attila on the Catalaunian Fields, had largely fallen into oblivion by the 18th century, they merely form a backdrop to the highly-dramatic “Sex and Crime†on the operatic stage. In contrast with the original Roman story, “Ezio†remains alive at the “happy endingâ€, and the enthusiastic public experienced this version for the first time on 15 January 1732 in London . However, despite this, the opera only received five performances during Handel’s lifetime. Handel took the overture from his incomplete opera “Titus l’Empereurâ€. The new vocal score is based on Vol. II/26 of the Halle Handel Edition (BA 4086).

The Italian oratorio La Resurrezione (The Resurrection) was written during Handel’s time in Rome. It was performed on Easter Sunday 1708 with great splendour and extravagance by a large orchestra conducted by Arcangelo Corelli in the Palazzo Bonelli, the Roman palazzo of Handel’s patron the Marchese Francesco Maria Ruspoli. In its dramatic structure and characterisation of the protagonists, the work displays a striking affinity with Italian opera. Lucifer’s raging sixty fourth notes call to mind the demon characters in Venetian opera and Maddalena’s arias are so full of expressive power and virtuosity that Handel later incorporated one of them into his opera Agrippina. The unusual musical richness of this work and the virtuosic and masterly shaping of the arias make it a welcome addition to any concert programme.

Handel’s “Deidamia†was premièred on 10 January 1741 only a few weeks after “Imeneoâ€.The librettist Paoli Rolli , a previously unsucessful librettist for Handel, delivered with his finest work “Deidamiaâ€. On 10 February 1741 the third and final opera performances of this work took place under Handel’s direction. Oddly enough “Deidamia†would not be performed again until the beginning of the 20th century. This opera is based on the themes of humour and seriousness. The personal harmonising of Heroism (Achilles) and Love ( Deidamia ) build on the essential dramatic features of this work. “Deidamia†is the last great opera in a series of masterpieces: “Orlandoâ€, “Poroâ€, “Ezioâ€, “Ariodanteâ€, “Alcinaâ€, “Serse†and “Imeneoâ€. The vocal score is based on the Urtext of the Halle Handel Editon.

With his Venti pezzi per pianoforte (1938), the Hungarian composer Sándor Veress (1907-92) wanted to create a collection of piano miniatures on folk melodies destined for use in the concert hall as well as for teaching purposes. Each piece is based on one or more songs and dances from different Hungarian speaking areas, which are re-elaborated and presented in a carefully conceived alternation of character, musical writing and technical difficulty. The result is a multi-colored overview of Hungarian folk music: songs of a pathetic or even dramatic nature are contrasted with lighter and high-spirited pieces, interspersed with dances of varying types, among which a homogeneousblock stands out formed by the group of Csárdás, a typical tavern dance also used by Liszt. The Venti pezzi per pianoforte represent the culmination of the extensive ethnomusicological research made by Veress in the ’30s and ‘40s, while working as assistant to László Lajtha and to Béla Bartók, and at the same time carrying out field work in Hungary and neighboring countries. The composer intended that this collection should play a fundamental role of mediation between folklore and western “art†music, by revitalizing the language from within, without resorting to the abstractions of the experimentation being developed in Europe at the time. During his lifetime Veress never succeeded in publishing the complete version of the Venti pezzi per pianoforte, but issued various selections of the pieces, two of which remained totally unpublished. The present critical edition prepared by Giada Viviani reconstructs the complete text of the Venti pezzi per pianoforte on the basis of manuscript sources kept at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel: the musical scores, with fingering by Jakub Tchorzewski, are accompanied by an introductory essay on the context in which the collection was created, including a description of the state of the sources and a detailed apparatus criticus of the textual variants. In ogni branovengono rielaborati uno o più canti e danze provenienti da diverse aree geografiche di lingua ungherese, che si susseguono in base a una sapiente alternanza di carattere, scrittura musicale, difficolt esecutiva. La scelta di questo strumento come uno dei mezzi di conoscenza del linguaggio musicale (meglio sarebbe dire la sua riconferma, dato l’utilizzo assai frequente in molte scuole italiane), ha ragioni semplici e perciò tanto più convincenti: innanzi tutto il basso costo e un ingombro ed un peso minimi; in secondo luogo la facile comprensione e messa in pratica della tecnica d’uso oltre alla sua secolare tradizione ricca anche di repertorio originale; infine la possibilità dello strumento di costituire un valido sostegno all’intonazione e all’emissione vocale.Per queste ragioni il testo presenta un breve itinerario, indispensabile al bambino per procedere con la lettura intonata e la tecnica strumentale.Questo quaderno comprende un percorso graduale di avviamento allo strumento utilizzando il linguaggio tradizionale. Il lavoro qui raccolto ha come presupposto la consapevolezza di aver tralasciato quegli ambiti di espressione che non si avvalgono dei codici tradizionali, vale a dire quelle esperienze che presumono l’utilizzo e la conoscenza di repertori che si allontanano dal linguaggio tonale e che si esprimono attraverso altre grafie di codifica. In questa direzione il volume avrebbe avuto tutt’altra impostazione e, pur ribadendo l’importanza di un approfondimento dei terreni musicali meno battuti e della loro esplicitazione anche attraverso uno strumento forse poco flessibile ad esperienze di questo tipo (almeno per i principianti) come il flauto dolce, si è ritenuto di mettere a disposizione un itinerario strumentale che ha dalla sua una validità consolidata nel tempo.Il repertorio, certamente non esaustivo, ha avuto come criteri di scelta quegli ambiti geografici e temporali che più hanno messo in evidenza le caratteristiche dello strumento. È per questo motivo che per i brani d’autore si è privilegiato l’ambito rinascimentale e barocco e per ciò che riguarda la provenienza geografica ci si è rivolti verso quelle tradizioni che hanno fatto del flauto uno strumento protagonista.Per ciò che riguarda i brani d’insieme, ci preme sottolineare che le indicazioni degli strumenti non sono vincolanti poiché a tutti è nota la proverbiale carenza di attrezzature nelle scuole che impedisce l’utilizzo di diversi organici. Ogni insegnante si adatti quindi alle risorse che la scuola fornisce. Inoltre, le brevi strumentazioni dei brani proposti sono da considerarsi solo un supporto di completezza qualora si intenda dare forma più compiuta all’esecuzione. Il percorso, pertanto, può proseguire anche con la semplice esecuzione dei brani al flauto dolce senza il corredo delle elaborazioni per un organico più ampio.Relativamente agli equilibri sonori e timbrici tra le parti, ogni insegnante li adatti in base al numero degli allievi delle proprie classi e degli strumenti disponibili. In linea generale è bene ricordare che, in fase esecutiva, una sufficiente intensità sonora si ottiene con almeno 5-6 flauti dolci, ma se il registro sale all’acuto possono essere sufficienti anche la metà. Un’utile strategia di lavoro può essere quella di decidere insieme agli allievi le possibilità di distribuzione numerica degli strumenti. Sostegno sempre indispensabile all’insegnante è uno strumento armonico (chitarra o pianoforte) utilizzato per accompagnare e sostenere le esecuzioni.I brani qui raccolti serviranno di collegamento e supporto alle attività di esercitazione ritmica, melodica, armonica, vocale, di ascolto e di analisi delle forme, tutti temi approfonditi dagli altri quaderni della collana.

The Soldier's Wife is a short and simple piece commissioned by the Singapore Ministry of Education. It was originally intended as a compulsory piece for the 2012 Singapore Youth Festival. Because many school bands in Singapore areincomplete, the composer was specifically asked to create a work that could equally be played by a limited ensemble - which explains various doubled and optional parts. The Soldier’s Wife is een kort en eenvoudig werkje dat is geschreven in opdracht van het Singaporese ministerie van Onderwijs. Het was aanvankelijk bedoeld als verplicht werk voor het Singapore Youth Festival 2012. Omdat veelschoolorkesten in Singapore een onvolledige bezetting hebben, kreeg de componist het nadrukkelijke verzoek om het werk zo vorm te geven dat het ook met een beperkt ensemble uitgevoerd kan worden: dat verklaart een aantal verdubbelingenen instrumenten ad libitum.Een warme, melodische passage opent dit korte werkje: de vrouw van het - houten - soldaatje zingt als het ware een wiegeliedje. Nadat dit lyrische deel is afgerond, volgt een energieker gedeeltedat qua melodisch materiaal op dezelfde bouwstenen is gebaseerd. De hier en daar gesyncopeerde ritmiek verleent dit deel een bijzondere energie, en ook harmonisch zijn er een paar verrassende wendingen - waarbij rekening is gehoudenmet de beperkingen die verbonden zijn aan werken voor dit muzikale niveau. Begon het werkje zacht en liefelijk, aan het slot is er heel wat meer ‘girl power’ voelbaar!Sieh an hier haben wir die Frau des hölzernen Soldaten! Zu Beginn singt sie ein sanftes Wiegenlied, doch dann folgt ein kraftvollerer Abschnitt mit synkopierten Rhythmen und überraschenden harmonischen Wendungen. Ist dieses Werk, das auch vonunvollständig besetzten Blasorchestern gespielt werden kann, zu Beginn noch leise und lieblich, klingt zum Schluss doch schon wesentlich mehr weibliche Energie“ durch...!« Regarde, c’est la femme du soldat de bois » ! Tout d’abord, elle chante une tendre berceuse. Vient ensuite une partie plus puissante, avec des rythmes syncopés et de surprenantes contorsions de la trame harmonique. All’inizio, canta una dolce ninnananna, che precede una sezione più potente dai ritmi sincopati e con sorprendenti cambiamenti di armonie. The Soldier’s Wife inizia in modo calmo e dolce per poi trovare un’energia tipicamente femminile verso il finale. The Soldier’s Wife è un brano breve e semplice, perfetto anche per formazioni a organico ridotto grazie alle parti raddoppiate e opzionali.

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times Five States of Change is geschreven in opdracht van Kunstfactor voor de 4e divisie van de NBK (Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen) 2011. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk.Five States of Change wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Widmung gilt Jappie Dijkstra und dem Musik-Informationszentrum (MUI) in Arnhem(Holland), in Anerkennung derer außerordentlichen Bemühungen um die Entwicklung des Blasorchester-Repertoires. Der Komponist über sein Werk: Die Idee zu diesem Stück kam mir beim Lesen eines Artikels über eine Richtung derchinesischen Philosophie, die abgekürzt Wu Xing* heißt, was nicht wörtlich übersetzt werden kann, aber so viel wie fünf Elemente, fünf Phasen oder fünf Stadien der Verwandlung bedeutet. Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio†musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.

Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times Five States of Change is geschreven in opdracht van Kunstfactor voor de 4e divisie van de NBK (Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen) 2011. Het werk is opgedragen aan Jappie Dijkstra en het MUI (Muziekuitleen- en Informatiecentrum) te Arnhem,als waardering voor hun inspanningen met betrekking tot de ontwikkeling van het repertoire voor blaasorkesten.De componist schrijft: Het idee voor het werk kwam in mij op toen ik een artikel las over een takbinnen de Chinese filosofie waarvan denaam wordt afgekort tot Wu Xing* - waar geen exacte vertaling voor is, maar wat zoveel betekent als vijf elementen, vijf fasen of vijf stadia van verandering. Het gaat om eenwezenlijk onderdeel van alle componenten binnen hetChinese gedachtegoed, inclusief de wetenschap, filosofie, geneeskunst en astrologie. Simpel gezegd draait het om het creëren van diverse cyclische verbanden tussen vijf elementendie in ieders leven een rol spelen.Een voorbeeld: Aarde - Metaal - Water- Hout - Vuur - (Aarde) enz. In deze cyclus bevat aarde metaal, metaal verandert in vloeistof (water) door verhitting, water helpt bomen te groeien, houtdat brandt creëert vuur, en vuur produceert as (aarde). Zo blijft de cyclus voortgaan. Zelf wasik vooral ge nteresseerd in de cyclus van emoties: Meditatie - Verdriet - Angst - Boosheid - Vreugde - (Meditatie) enz. De gedachte aandit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Five States of Changebestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijzete laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van hetvoorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk.Five States of Change wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Widmung gilt Jappie Dijkstra und dem Musik-Informationszentrum (MUI) in Arnhem(Holland), in Anerkennung derer außerordentlichen Bemühungen um die Entwicklung des Blasorchester-Repertoires. Der Komponist über sein Werk: Die Idee zu diesem Stück kam mir beim Lesen eines Artikels über eine Richtung derchinesischen Philosophie, die abgekürzt Wu Xing* heißt, was nicht wörtlich übersetzt werden kann, aber so viel wie fünf Elemente, fünf Phasen oder fünf Stadien der Verwandlung bedeutet. DiesesPrinzip nimmt eine zentrale Position im gesamten chinesischen Gedankengut ein, sei es in der Wissenschaft, Medizin oder Astrologie. Einfach ausgedrückt, werden damit in allen Lebensbereichen verschiedene zyklische Beziehungen zwischenfünf Elementen hergestellt.Zum Beispiel: Erde - Metall - Wasser - Holz - Feuer - (Erde) - usw. In diesem Zyklus enthält die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflüssigt (Wasser); Wasser lässt Bäume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer)und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefühlen:Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Ärger - Freude - (Meditation) usw.Ich dachte mir, dass dieser Kreislauf eine wirkungsvolleemotionale Reise“ durch ein Musikstück darstellen könnte. Folglich besteht Five States of Change aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organischwachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Cette œuvre est dédiée Jappie Dijkstra et au Music Information Centre (MUI) d’Arnhem, aux Pays-Bas, en hommage leur rôle exceptionnel dans le développement du répertoire pour Orchestre Vent.Le compositeur écrit : L’idée de cette composition m’est venue alors que je lisais un article sur un aspect de la philosophie chinoise, connu sous l’abréviation de Wu Xing*, qu’il est impossible de traduire littéralement mais qui peut signifier, par exemple, cinq éléments, cinq phases ou cinq états de changement. Toutechose dans l’univers est le fruit d’un cycle de création (ou d’engendrement) et de domination (ou contrôle). Ce concept est essentiel tous les éléments de la pensée chinoise, y compris les sciences, la philosophie, la médecine et l’astrologie et, en termes simples, il représente les multiples rapports cycliques qui existent entre cinq éléments liés l’univers et toute chose dans l’univers, donc l’homme.Évoquons le cycle de la création : Terre - Métal - Eau - Bois - Feu - (Terre) etc. La terre contient des minéraux, source de métal, le métal peut être fondu et se liquéfie, l’eau arrose et fait pousser les arbres, le bois br le et produit du feu, le feu produit des cendres, une sorte de terre, dans une dynamique cyclique perpétuelle.Parmi tous les cycles existants, celui des émotions éveilla particulièrement mon intérêt : Méditation - Chagrin - Peur - Colère - Joie - (Méditation) etc. et je me suis dit que ce principe cyclique pourrait être la source d’un puissant et émotionnel voyage musical. Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio†musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.
