Beethoven’s “Diabelli Variationsâ€, written between 1819 and 1823, mark the pinnacle of his oeuvre for variations and next to Bach’s “Goldberg Variations†form one of the most important contributions to this genre. In addition to Beethoven, 50 other composers from Austria, mainly Vienna, followed Diabelli’s call to create variations for his famous waltz, among them Czerny, Moscheles, Fr. X. Mozart, Schubert, the 11-year-old Liszt and J. N. Hummel. The variations first printed by Diabelli fictively as “Fatherlandish Union of Artists Part I†(Beethoven’s op. 120) and “Part II†(the 50 variations of Vienna’s “most excellent composers and virtuososâ€) are presented here by Mario Aschauer for the first time in one edition. Furthermore the variations of Part II appear in an Urtext edition for the first time. The musical text is based on a meticulous study of the sources and for the first time relevant discrepancies between the main sources are presented in light grey print.A detailed Critical Commentary (Eng) and notes regarding Viennese piano performance practice during Beethoven’s day complete this special Urtext edition based on the most current research.

French organist and composer, Marcel Dupré (1886-1971) is also remembered as a significant pedagogue. However, his prominence within the organ repertoire remains absolute with sublime works, including his Variations on a Noel. Dupré studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Louis Vierne and Charles-Marie Widor, where he won prizes for piano, organ and fugue, as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He was a famous organ virtuoso and was able to perform the entire works composed for the instrument by J. S. Bach from memory. Dupré's Op. 20, the Variations on a Noel for organ was composed in 1922. It is based on an old Noel (Pastorale) in D minor. The variations displays contrast through tonality, rhythm, timbre and harmony, among other aspects. Dupré's compositions and didactic works remain important to organists today and his Variations on a Noel is no exception.

Piano solo part for Paganini Variations - Piano Concerto No.3 by Poul Ruders (2014). Score available: WH32201 Programme note: In 1999 my friend, American guitar virtuoso David Starobin, wanted me to write a concerto for guitar and orchestra. It quickly dawned on me, that this commission presented a golden opportunity to contribute to the time-honoured tradition of composing a series of variations on Nicolo Paganini's famous 24th Caprice for violin solo, a work which itself is a set of variations. The 16 bar (with the first 4 bars repeated) theme is not particularly sophisticated or intricate, but its inherent simplicity and logic just grow on you, almost to the point ofdistraction - and the secret behind it being hauled through the wringer by composers as disparate as Liszt, Brahms, Rachmaninoff and Lutoslawski is perhaps found in its - what I'll call, with a quick nervous look over my shoulder: brilliant banality. You can do anything with that tune, it'll always be recognizable and just there, however much you maul it. The piece (subtitled Guitar Concerto no 2) was written pretty quickly, premiered and subsequently recorded for Bridge Records with David and the Odense Symphony Orchestra conducted by Jan Wagner, and everybody was happy. But the story didn't end there, and it must be the ultimate proof of the durability of the theme, not to mention the flexibility and far-sightedness of David Starobin , when he 14 years later suggested why not transcribe the solo part for piano?. The idea appealed to me immediately. One thing was clear from the beginning: the new version could in no way sound like a transcription. My aim was to end up with a solo-part sounding like were it the one-and-only, the real thing, if you like. The orchestral score remains exactly the same in both cases. Both versions, the two Paganini Variations, are comparable to a set of twins, not quite identical, but almost. And both each others's equal. Poul Ruders.

This composition is based on a passacaglia theme, in which artistic perfection, symphonic drama and oriental melody lines play a role. The passacaglia is originally a dance made up of a series of variations above a bass line constantly present as an ostinato. It is not in this sense that the Symphonic Variations are in the passacaglia form but in the sense of the open form of the variations. Jacob de Haan, himself originally an organist, took his inspiration for this piece from the famous passacaglia for organ in C-minor by J.S. Bach. Following the introduction of the passacaglia theme (in the bass) the entry by the trumpets and trombones forms the majestic start to amusical adventure, in which this theme (often fragmentary) returns in variations. Then there follow two faster movements with dramatic contrasts and virtuose passages. Particularly striking here is the use of two characteristic intervals from the beginning of the theme namely the minor second and the augmented fourth. An apause in the composition comes in the slow bridge where a syncopated bourdon (perfect fifth) is constantly repeated. The tension grows in dynamics and harmony, and the oriental-flavour becomes obvious in the melody. We arrive at a faster movement via an accelerando, in which a perpetuum mobile based on the passacaglia theme is central. Finally the whole flows into a martial theme, in which the ostinato accompaniment n the descant derives from the passacaglia theme.

Rachmaninoff wrote his well-known piano cycle in 1931, at a time when his great works for piano solo and the piano concertos had already made him very famous. Yet it is by no means the “work of an old manâ€. The composerÂ’s variations on the theme “La folia†(taken from a sonata by Corelli) are like a series of fireworks on the piano. He once drily said to a friend, “All this mad running about is necessary in order to efface the themeâ€. Did Rachmaninoff succeed in silencing “la folia†– i.e. the “madnessâ€? Why not seefor yourself!

Radegund Variations (2017) was written for and is dedicated to Hartmut Siebmanns, cantor and organist in Possneck, in the Thuringia region of Germany. This work was inspired by the life of Radegund (ca. 520-587), who was a Thuringian princess (and later Frankish queen) most famous for founding the Abbey of the Holy Cross in Poitiers, France. The piece begins with an original theme: its contemporary view of ancient modality represents looking back from the present time into Radegund's era. The theme is followed by six contrasting variations, inspiration for which are drawn from events in Radegund's life: her marriage and joining the Frankish court (1st variation); her flight from the court (after the murder of her brother) to seek protection from the church (2nd variation); her devotion to the needy (3rd variation); her friendship with the poet Venantius Fortunatus and her commissioning of his sacred poem Vexilla Regis (4th variation); her gifts of healing (5th variation); and the building of the abbey (6th variation). Aulis Sallinen (b. 1935) is one of the most famous Finnish contemporary composers. In his early instrumental works, Sallinen was still seeking to establish a style of his own. He had studied at the Sibelius Academy in the late 1950s, first with Aarre Merikanto - a composer representing a national brand of Neoclassicism - and then with Joonas Kokkonen, at that time just transitioning from Neoclassicism to dodecaphony. Twelve-tone music had won fairly widespread acceptance in contemporary Finn-ish music, and Sallinen was influenced, too. The Variations are Sallinen's first real work for the cello - an instrument that would later be one of his favourites, its warm, deep voice corres-ponding to his music's often dark undercurrent. The Variations for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 5 were composed in 1961-1962 and premiered in October 1962. The basic motif consists of a set of three descending intervals stated by the cello at the beginning: D-D flat-F, C-B-G and B flat-A-F sharp. Their use as basic material is a ref-lection of the composer's dodecaphony-oriented period, and variation of this material provides the framework for the piece. Variations for Cello and Orchestra are now published for the first time. Available are a reduction for cello and piano, study score and complete performance material with orchestra.

'Six Pieces' Op. 19 is the first collection of piano pieces by Tchaikovsky which contributed significantly to his growing renown as most important Russian composer apart from Anton Rubinstein. Famous contemporary pianists like Nikolai Rubinstein and Hans von Bulow performed Reverie du soir (Op. 19, No. 1) or Theme original et variations (No. 6) in their concerts in the 1870s. Commissioned by his Moscow publisher P. I. Jurgenson, Six Pieces Op. 19 was composed by Tchaikovsky in the summer and autumn of 1873, i.e. during his time as professor of theory at the Moscow Conservatoire.Bulow had entered 'little changes' in his own copy of the first edition of Variations Op. 19/6. There is, however, no documentary proof which of Bulow's changes Tchaikovsky eventually included in the Nouvelle edition revue et corrigee par l'auteur of Op. 19 published only in 1890. The present new edition therefore contains both versions of the Variations. Tchaikovsky's version of the first edition can be found in the appendix of the present volume, Bulow's version expressly adopted by Tchaikovsky is presented together with Nos. 1-5 in the main text of the volume on the basis of the Nouvelle edition revue et corrigee par l'auteur from 1890.

In the 1870s, visiting American composer Henry Clay Work (1832-1884), from Connecticut, happened to stay at the George Hotel, in Piercebridge, in the North of England, and was told the story of the Jenkins brothers and the old clock. He was fascinated by the story, and using it as inspiration, composed a song which he published in 1878 after his return to the States. This song - My Grandfather?s Clock - is reputedly his own interpretation of the Piercebridge clock story, and became very famous, selling over a million copies. Japanese arranger Takao Shirikawa has produced this theme and variations, based on the famous melody, for four clarinets. Henry Clay Work komponierte dieses Stuck im 18.
