La Peri is a ballet in one act by Paul Dukas, written in 1912 and first performed in Paris. The Fanfare was originally scored for full brass ensemble, however this great arrangement for Trombone Quintet by Andrew Poirier is one of the favorites of the Canadian Trombone Ensemble iTromboni. For advanced performers, the work is about 2 minutes in length.

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes.The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future.

De kolonisatie, de slavernij en de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog: drie periodes die een belangrijke rol spelen in de geschiedenis van de staat Virginia. De expressieve inleiding geeft de avonturen en ontberingen van de eerste kolonistenweer. Vanaf 1619 voert Virginia ten behoeve van de tabaksplantages als eerste staat zwarte slaven in. Dit wordt uitgedrukt in een langzaam gedeelte, waarin een melancholiek mineurthema en elementen van de blues het uitgangspuntvormen. Het scherp koper kondigt de Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog aan. Het slotthema verklankt verlossing en hoop.

Auf der Landkarte sieht der amerikanische Staat Virginia wie ein etwas schief geratenes Dreieck aus. Diese Form schlägt sich bildhaft in der vorliegenden Komposition nieder, die den Staat aus drei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln beleuchtet, drei Zeitabschnitten, die für Virginia von besonderer Bedeutung waren: Die Kolonisation, die Sklaverei und der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg. Die bewegenden Ereignisse wurden in mal lebhafte, dann wieder langsame, in mal kämpferische, mal friedvolle und mal melancholische und schließlich optimistisch stimmende Musik umgesetzt. Ein ausdrucksstarkes Werk über ein bewegendes Stück amerikanischer Geschichte!

Pour composer cette oeuvre au caractère épique, Jacob de Haan s’est inspiré de trois périodes marquantes de l’histoire de l’État de Virginie : la colonisation, l’esclavage et la guerre de Sécession. L’introduction expressive dépeint les aventures et les difficultés affrontées par les premiers colons. Le second mouvement plus mélancolique développe un thème mélodique mineur aux accents de blues symbolisant le déplacement des esclaves noirs en route vers les plantations de tabac de la Virginie, l’un des premiers États esclavagistes américains. L’entrée brutale et soudaine des cuivres annonce le début de la guerre civile….

The Golden Age is a programmatic composition in four movements. I Overture For the Netherlands, the seventeenth century was a period of great flourishing in the fields of economy, culture and politics; thus it is called the Golden Age. Overseas trade boomed, and the Dutch East India Company (known as the VOC by the Dutch) was founded and expanded to become a powerful -and, at the time - modern enterprise. II ¡Adiós españoles!(Farewell, Spaniards!) In 1567, the Spanish army invaded, led by the Duke of Alva. There was a fierce resistance against the Spanish tyranny; toward the end of the sixteenth century, the Dutch proclaimed theRepublic. However, the Spanish continued the war. Only with the Treaty of Münster in 1648 did the Dutch get their much sought-after independence. This was also the end of the Eighty Years’ War. III Rembrandt’s Night WatchThe field of culture, particularly literature, painting, sculpture, architecture, the art of printing, and cartography developed fast. It was in the Golden Age that the celebrated painter Rembrandt van Rijn created his famous Night Watch. IV The Admiral Overseas trade entailed the colonization of large areas in Asia, from where precious products that yielded lots of money were brought in. Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.

Dan volgt ¡Adiós españoles! over het einde van de Tachtigjarige Oorlog.Rembrandt’s Night Watch beschrijft de ontwikkeling op cultureel gebied: in de Gouden Eeuw schilderde Rembrandt van Rijn zijn beroemde Nachtwacht. Deel vier, The Admiral, begint met Rule Britannia,waarna de Nederlandse admiraal Michiel de Ruyter de Engelsen een toontje lager laat zingen, er is zelfs kanongebulder te horen. Dan klinkt een fragment van het Nederlandse liedje dat aan Michiel de Ruyter is gewijd, waarna een passendslot volgt.

In dieser Periode erlebte das Land eine Blütezeit des (Übersee-)Handels, der Kultur und Politik, es befreite sich von der spanischen Herrschaft, brachte Kunstwerke wie Rembrandt’s Nachtwache hervor und entwickelte sich zu einer Kolonialmacht. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Zuhörer ist bei Kees Schoonenbeeks spannender musikalischer Geschichtsstunde garantiert!

Après une guerre qui dura 80 ans, l'Espagne reconnut finalement l'indépendance des Provinces-Unies néerlandaises, qui devinrent alors l’une des plus importantes puissances maritimes et économiques du XVIIe siècle. Cette période est connue sous le nom de Siècle d’or (The Golden Age) et correspond une phase de développement exceptionnel des Pays-Bas tant sur le plan colonial et militaire que sur le plan culturel, intellectuel et artistique.

Dopo una guerra che durò 80 anni, la Spagna riconobbe l’indipendenza delle Province-Unite olandesi che divennero potenze marittime ed economiche del XVII secolo. Questo periodo è conosciuto con il nome di Secolo d’Oro (The Golden Age) e corrisponde ad una fase di sviluppo eccezionale dei Paesi Bassi sia sul piano coloniale e militare, sia sul piano culturale, intellettuale e artistico.

In Concerto d’Amore, a maestoso opening is followed by a quick and energetic movement that leads to a magnificent adagio. A motif from this adagio can be heard in a swinging movement, after which the piece comes to a close with the return of the adagio. This arrangement for concert band certainly brings this beautiful music to life.

In Concerto d’Amore worden drie verschillende stijlen gecombineerd: barok, pop en jazz. De maestoso introductie van de compositie klinkt als een barokouverture. Dan volgt een energiek gedeelte in popstijl, dat uitmondt in eenadagio. Een motief daaruit is daarna te horen in een swingende passage, waarna het werk besluit met de terugkeer van het adagio in een nieuw jasje.

Concerto d’Amore vereinigt drei unterschiedliche Stile: Barock, Pop und Jazz. Die Maestoso bezeichnete Einleitung der Komposition klingt wie eine barocke Ouvertüre. Es folgt ein energiereicher Abschnitt im Pop-Stil, der wiederum zu einem Adagio führt. Ein Motiv aus diesem Adagio ist in der darauf folgenden Swing-Passage zu hören. Dann kehrt Adagio in neuem Gewand zurück, um das Werk zu beenden.

Concerto d’Amore est composé de trois périodes thématiques aux caractéristiques de la musique baroque, pop et jazz. L’introduction majestueuse, aux allures d’ouverture baroque, chemine vers un passage vif et énergique écrit dans le style de la musique pop. L’adagio qui lui succède progresse vers un passage aux inflexions de swing. Concerto d’Amore se conclut par la reprise du motif de l’adagio dont la forme altérée offre une conclusion brillante cette œuvre richement colorée.

Concerto d’Amore si compone di tre periodi tematici con caratteristiche della musica barocca, pop e jazz. La maestosa introduzione, dagli accenti barocchi, accompagna ad un passaggio vivo ed energico scritto nello stile della musica pop. Segue l’adagio che sviluppa un passaggio dalle inflessioni swing. Concerto d’Amore si conclude con la ripresa del motivo dell’adagio la cui forma alterata offre una conclusione brillante.

Born in Jarrow, northeast England, in 1949, John Miles was something of a child prodigy, learning the piano from the age of five. In the early ’60s he persuaded his father to buy him a guitar and by the end of the decade he had joined a semi-professional band, The Influence. The group soon disbanded and by 1969 Miles was recording with his own group, The John Miles Band, releasing a dozen singles in the early ’70s. In 1975 Miles decided to move to London and secured a deal with Decca Records. By October that year, a newly formed band, John Miles and Co, had released their debut single, Highfly, but their greatest hit, which stormed the British charts in March 1976, was Music.

In 1976 bestormde het nummer Music van de band John Miles and Co de hitparades. Music, vaak bekritiseerd als pompeus en hoogdravend in een periode die steeds meer de kant van de punk opging, was in feite typisch Britsetechnopop en daarbij een bepalende plaat voor die tijd, samen met nummers als Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Met veel gevoel voor dynamiek en dramatiek werkt deze ode aan de muziek nog altijd aanstekelijk.

Music, ein Hit aus den bewegten 70er-Jahren, ist einer der Titel, die diese Ära nachhaltig geprägt haben. Leise und laut, gefühlvoll und dramatisch, zieht diese Hymne an die Musik in der Bearbeitung von Philip Sparke auch heute Orchester und Zuhörer unweigerlich in ihren Bann.
