Paperback-Felix Mendelssohn's For He Shall Give His Angels Charge Over Thee for SSAATTBB unaccompanied.Written in 1844 in thanksgiving for the preservation of the life of the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm after an unsuccessful assassination attempt this is the original a cappella version of the well-known chorus from Elijah. This edition presents both English and German texts.

Immediately after completing ?St. Paul? in 1836 Mendelssohn mulled over the idea of composing a further oratorio. However a whole decade elapsed before the composition of ?Elijah? which takes as its theme the story of the Biblical prophet from the 1st Book of Kings. When he received the invitation to write a major work for the Birmingham Music Festival Mendelssohn finally embarked on work on the oratorio. ?Elijah? was premiered in 1846 in Birmingham with great success and has enjoyed great popularity ever since.Following the first performance Mendelssohn undertook a revision of the oratorio inwhich whole numbers were removed and new ones substituted. This is the version which was first heard in 1847 in London and which is still performed today.To mark the Mendelssohn anniversary year 2009 the Mendelssohn specialist Douglass Seaton Professor at Florida State University prepared a critical new edition of the oratorio. Mendelssohn’s Elijah is an oratorio for SATB soli SATB chorus orchestra and organ with the text derived from the Lutheran Bible by Julius Schubring. For his oratorio Mendelssohn made a discreet selection from St Paul's eventful life as recounted in the Acts of the Apostles. The story begins with the stoning of St Steven by the Jews and continues through his miraculous conversion to the scene in Lystra where Paul himself isnearly martyred by stoning and his farewell in Miletus. Hardly any oratorio of the Romantic period could match St Paul in popularity. Only years later was it overtaken in the public esteem by Mendlessohn's Elijah. In the first two years following its premiere performance it was performed in over fifty German cities in many European capitals and the United States.

Mendelssohn wrote the Christian anthem Hear My Prayer in Germany in 1844 and premiered it the next year in London. William Bartholomew wrote the English lyrics as well as collaborating with the composer on his oratorioElijah.Wings of a Dove the second part of Hear My Prayer is frequently performed as a separate work and was made famous in the UK through a 1927 recording. The work was originally written for SATB Chorus and Organ or Orchestra and is here rendered for two Voices with Piano transposed from G to F to meet the requirements of amateur singers.
