When Sydney Carter died in March 2004, his obituary in The Guardian anointed him 'folk poet, holy sceptic, and iconoclastic theologian'. The man who once called himself 'God's loyal opposition' might have thought that a bit excessive, but there is some truth there and it is likely he wouldn't have minded too much. Franciscus Henri knew the songs on this CD forty years ago. In 1972 he was chosen accompanist on Sydney's tour of Australia. These songs are part of the performer's continuing journey. Will deal with more difficult pulse divisions, greater detail in requirements of touch contrasts, octaves moving against arpeggios, scale figures against chords, more complexity in part-writing and antiphonal movement, melody in both hands above or below accompaniment shared by the hands on half or quarter beat, more artistic use of pedal required. Guided tests show how to read progressions of block harmony, to balance melodies in poper proportion, to recognise ornamental notes, cadences-inverted and decorated, and spot essentials. 12, 16, 32 bars.

Cascading bells played by choir members and the recurring phrase “Et in terra pax” between the verses of the familiar melody create a joyful seasonal showcase for treble voices. The final triumphant verse features a majestic descant and transitions into a sonorous conclusion on the final phrase, “good will to all.&rdquo.

This brilliant and impressive work might be described as an outburst of optimism and brightness. It is divided into three main parts, each built out of several short sections, all connected by a continuous flowing piano accompaniment with the texture shifting back and forth between a chorale-like hymn and a three part canon. The third part is a bell-like finale.

Equinox was written in late 2011 as a showcase for the euphonium quartet Euphony, who gave the premiere at the opening concert of the 'Festival of Brass' at the Royal Northern College of Music in January 2012. Since then, Euphony have played the work extensively, including a performance at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in June 2012, at the Brucknerhaus Concert Hall in Linz, Austria. The word 'equinox' is derived from the Latin aequi (equal) and nox (night). It is the name given to the twice-yearly occasion when the earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun, so that day and night are of the same duration. With this in mind I structured the work from two thematic groups, consisting of sections of equal length. The first, which is heard after a brief introduction, is marked Energico, and its character is marked by sustained, lyrical lines unfolding over an accompaniment of rapid and deftly articulated rhythmical phrases. The second section, slow and expressive, offers the strongest contrast both in mood and tempo. By a further association of ideas, this sharp distinction of material could be thought of as representing the frenzy of daytime in comparison with the tranquillity of night. In the third and final section, figures from both the preceding sections are brought together in a vigorous finale, the interplay of the four parts intended to demonstrate the capabilities of the euphonium to the full. Equinox was the winning entry in the 2012 Stainer & Bell Award for Brass Composition, held at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama.

Rhian Samuel's Phantasy Trio is a lively and challenging addition to the repertoire of an instrumental genre infrequently visited by contemporary composers. Its five movements are played without a break, their musical discourse focused by the sustained dynamic interaction of piano, violin and cello. After a preludial opening of filigree arabesques shared between the players, material in the spirit of an Irish jig forms the topic of the second and fourth movements, which enclose a scherzo of violent contrasts. In the finale, thematic elements of much that has gone before are gathered up and assessed, to conclude the score in a mood of quiet fantasy and a hushed final cadence.

This setting of Videntes stellam aims to explore the extremes of emotion surrounding the revelation of Christ. The piece begins by depicting the vision of the star and the journey of the Kings, utilising a bright harmonic language in the organ and emphatic, cascading outbursts of praise from the choir, periodically interrupted by more reflective iterations of the text. Following a final declaration of exaltation and joy, the piece concludes with a peaceful and reverential picture of the giving of gifts to the infant Jesus, fading away as the organ takes up the original theme under the final statement of '... myrrham' from the choir. Suitable for evensongs or concerts throughout the whole of the Advent, Christmas and Epiphany seasons. Videntes stellam was the 2013 winner of the New Music for St Paul's Cathedral Composition Competition.

The third and final volume devoted to the anthems of S. S. Wesley completes the canon with 23 original works written in the period between his departure from Exeter Cathedral to become organist of Leeds parish church in 1842 and 1874, the likely date of his final essays in the genre. Moving towards a greater simplicity of style, with less counterpoint and dissonance, but emphasising elements of colour, timbre and texture, these works are in general conceived on a more modest scale than earlier pieces such as The Wilderness. Even so, they show the composer continuing to experiment with the Anglican verse anthem, the evolution of which had been the cornerstone of a creative achievement without equal in the history of the English cathedral tradition between Purcell and Stanford.

Both large-scale masses by Robert Fayrfax included in this volume are believed to be late works. O quam glorifica, in particular, was composed in 1511 for his supplication for the degree of Doctor of Music at Oxford, and in it the composer comprehensively explores the possibilities of extended structural planning. A feature of this edition is the restoration of the metrical character of the original, distorted in all surviving copies. Probably predating O quam glorifica, Tecum principium exhibits a simpler form, and is remarkable for the stylistic feature of unprepared dissonant fourths in the final section of the Agnus dei.

The publication of the fragments known as the 'York Masses' offers a prime opportunity for re-evaluating the wider context of English polyphonic Mass composition in the final decades of the fifteenth century. This source stands out as the only extended collection devoted entirely to music for the Mass Ordinary, and as such it provides a significant example of developments after the Brussels Masses. It can also suggest important correctives to the traditional historiographical idea of insular conservatism in Mass composition. The volume contains four Kyries, including Horwod's O rex clemens, two each of Gloria-Credo and Sanctus-Agnus pairs, the Missa Venit dilectus meus attributed to Johannes Cuk, and a Gloria-Credo a 3. Stone on Stone is a cantata for two soloists, choir and organ and just about anyone else who can join in. Timothy Dudley-Smith dramatizes the theme of the Trinity through a confrontation between the builders of a great church and groups of sceptical bystanders. The music, by former Muppet-Show MD Derek Scott, is continuous, and packed with good tunes. A 'Searcher of the Soul' (soprano or tenor) and a 'Watcher of the Heavens' (bass) meditate on the inner meaning of events. Different viewpoints are reconciled in the final affirmation 'A Trinity of Love who reigns alone', sung congregationally. Available in vocal score and separate melody edition, this highly accessible piece is guaranteed success whether performed by small groups or a massed gathering of singers.

Nature and landscape have been the dominant themes of much of Rhian Samuel's vocal music of the last ten years, projected chiefly through the poetry of Anne Stevenson, and in her most recent song-settings, the writings of the Pakistan-born Texas-based poet Zulfikar Ghose. His poem 'Conspiracy of the Clouds' describes how, the clouds having chosen to become invisible, 'Even the astronauts on the space shuttle / looked down on a cloudless America' as hurricanes ravage Louisiana and storms engulf Nebraska. An intriguing conceit in the tradition of magic realism, the text is presented as a scena lasting around 16 minutes, with interpolations from 'Haze' by the nineteenth-century New England transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau. Thus modern fable and romantic nature-description are juxtaposed, and their interaction becomes the source of musical contrasts too. Thoreau's words are assigned predominantly to the vocalist's highest register, those of Ghose to her lower tessitura; and the suggestive and dramatic accompaniment builds tension steadily to the final ironic response of an incredulous American public: not one of awe and wonder, but the question 'Why weren't we told about it?

Written in 2009 for an event to celebrate the Bicentenary of the birth of Charles Darwin, The Last Dance is a musical reflection on contemporary questions about the survival of our planet. It begins with energetic, even frenetic, material exchanged between the instruments. This is interspersed with moments of respose that are gradually extended, until the piece concludes with a quiet final section with solo first violin playing high above the other instruments, an ending open to many different interpretations.

The pattern of the book finds a place for material exploring a diversity of topics, such as childbirth, teenagers, creativity, women in the Bible, marriage and the breakdown of marriage, cot death, retirement, caring, Alzheimers, HIV and Aids, bereavement, greed, giving, working, worshipping, globalisation, coincidences, miracles, healing and the Spirit, summed up in the final item of the collection, the hymn God the Weaver. In each of the five sections - The Festival Way, The Biblical Way, The Disciples' Way, The Family Way and The Global Way - Marjorie allows us to see the 'working out of many of the texts through her own faith experience as a Methodist Local Preacher, dedicated to seeking out new paths in worship experiences meaningful for Christians today. Fresh musical settings are printed with all hymn texts, including several lively new arrangements of traditional songs. Incisive and observant, the author's unmistakable style will win many new admirers in this first collection of a writer and worship leader increasingly recognised for the breadth and vigour of her creative work.

Commissioned by the BBC as part of the celebrations for International Women's Day, and reflecting its theme of hope, Like a Singing Bird was premiered live on Radio 3 on 8 March 2015 by Sarah Connolly and the St Catharine's Girls' Choir, conducted by Edward Wickham. The distinctive vocal scoring features a small solo group of sopranos or mezzo-sopranos drawn from the upper-voice ensemble. The anthem is the first of three which are collectively entitled Echoes from Willow Wood, the second also being available in Choral Now. The text, Christina Rossetti's poem 'A Birthday', features in Virginia Woolf's classic essay A Room of One's Own, based on lectures delivered at Newnham College and at Randle's own Cambridge alma mater, Girton, an institution at the forefront of women's education for two centuries. Inspired by the clock in Girton's Stanley Library, the 'chiming rhythms' which are a driving force within the piece offer a further level of connection. The music moves from quiet anticipation to bright affirmation, the sense of something life-changing heralded by an Advent plainchant quoted in the second half. The final couplet is set apart in a hushed recitative, reflecting, in the composer's words, 'the hope I and other young female composers can have as we try to make our mark in what has traditionally been a male domain.'.

Antony Herschel Hill's Ave Verum Corpus for unaccompanied SATB is one of a number of liturgical works by this gifted composer. Written for Prebendary John Pearce and the choir of St Simon Zelotes, Chelsea, London, Hill's setting projects the awe and mystery of the text through a rich variety of harmony that particularly exploits the lower registers of the individual voices to great effect. If you have a really good choir, take advantage of this and buy it. For pure musicianship little else has equalled it recently; the sense of architecture is superb, the climaxes are clean, controlled and never contrived, and the final section, 'miserere mei', uses a wonderfully restrained sense of chromaticism. What a magic piece.
