After completing his studies with Zoltan Kodaly, the Hungarian composer Mathias Seiber (1905-1960) first worked as a musician in a dance orchestra on an ocean liner which gave him the opportunity to listen to jazz music in New York. From 1928 he taught the first jazz class worldwide at Dr. Koch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. In the winter term of 1928/29, 19 students had registered with whom he gave a public concert on 3 March 1929 which was broadcast by Radio Frankfurt. After the Nazis had seized power, the jazz class was dissolved, Seiber lost his job and emigrated to London. In 1932 he wrote his piano cycle 'Leichte Tanze' (Easy Dances), one of the early examples of the adoption of jazz forms and styles in so-called serious music. The present arrangement for orchestra is easily playable and is aimed at youth and amateur orchestras. Instrumentation: 2 flutes, clarinet, oboe (ad lib.), alto saxophone, trumpet, bassoon and strings. Movements: Cake Walk - Novelty Foxtrot - Gipsy Tango - Waltz - Walzer - Blues - Charleston.

On the workWritten originally for swing band in the 1970's in a work called A Minor Excursion I chose a rather bland tune for this suite. What originally brought this work alive was the improvisation and variation of the tune. Therefore this suite is a set of variations on the opening movement and I did this in homage to the original work. For me it's the following movements which make the work. The Prelude is just a simple statement of the theme with a small middle eight section which hints at the work's origin as a jazz piece. The rest of the movements grow from the opening and explores the Prelude in various ways. This is really jazz meets symphonic development. The theme can be clearly heard in all the movements but as the work reaches its conclusion the theme becomes more and more fragmented. The first performance was given on 20 November 1993 at Saint Edmund's Church, Village Way, Beckenham, Kent by the Bromley Oecumenical Singers and Orchestra, conducted by Tomas Creagh-Fuller. (Adrian Connell)Duration: 15 minutes.

These methods provide complete courses for players off all ages, guiding students from their first note to 'classics', together with compositions by contemporary writers. Each book is accompanied by high quality rhythm section tracks recorded on compact disc. Right from the start, students can enjoy authentic jazz sounds, playing in the company of professionals. With step-by-step instruction and a progression of specially written pieces, the fundamental elements of good technique are introduced alongside the rhythmic subtleties of jazz. Improvisation is encouraged from an early stage and is given direction through the systematic study of scales and arpeggios and advice on ear-training and chord patterns. With supplementary suggestions for listening and reading, and an Appendix containing all the chord progressions for 'live' accompaniment of the tunes, The Jazz Methods are ideally suited to both students working alone and those learning with a teacher. John O'Neill has a solid understanding of jazz and how it can be taught. I highly recommend his educational jazz materials. (Jamey Aebersold) ...a rare opportunity for a new player (or a more experienced one) to develop a really musical facility. A rare addition to the jazz improvising library. (Lee Konitz, international jazz saxophone soloist) Following on from the best-selling Jazz Method for Saxophone, Developing Jazz Technique for Saxophone will help intermediate players take their jazz skills to a new level. The 22 pieces are written in a variety of jazz styles, including reggae, jazz waltz, bossa nova, calypso, New Orleans, South African, salsa, samba, blues and swing. Special emphasis is given to helping students improvise over chord sequences, such as the II-V-I progression. Idiomatic effects such as vibrato, subtone, glissandi and 'bending' notes are dealt with, and there is a special chapter on overtones. Several new scales are introduced, including the whole tone and diminished scales, and a special section on patterns contains many ideas for practising in all 12 keys. A superb rhythm section provides backing for all the pieces and exercises on the accompanying CD.

Subtitled A Little Suite for Four, the first movement features a unison melody written in B minor. In the second movement, a leitmotiv with variations and the use of repeated jazz phrases is presented; all four instruments take turns in assuming primary and supporting roles. The third movement is a ballad-like theme featuring soprano and baritone sax sharing a pleasant conversation. The fourth movement goes on a joyful melodic ride passing through all the saxophones parts, one after the other.

In its original form the Suite was written in answer to a commission from the Farnham Festival and was first performed on 11 May 1971. I was, however, not entirely satisfied with it and did not pass it for publication until 1982, when I revised it in considerable detail. In its revised form it was first performed on 18 June, 1983, at Monash University, Melbourne. The music requires little explanation. The titles of each of the five movements indicate their character: 'Fanfare'; 'Dance', which has Elizabethan overtones; 'Popular Song', which explores jazz rhythms and harmonies; 'Ceremony' - a solemn chorale; and 'Finale', a light-hearted Rondo with fugal touches. The overall intention is simply to entertain both the players and their audiences.
