''Witold Lutoslawski treated the surrealistic poem of Jean Francois Chabrun as a symbolist story about love and death. In his musical interpretation, according to its default course he distinguished the subsequent stages of the opus which are characterised by different kinds of expression. The first stage is of an epic and lyrical character, the second refers to a lullaby, the third is of a dramatic nature and constitutes the culmination of the work, finally, the fourth stage is a kind of a lament ending with a reflective message. Lutoslawski's musical language is characterised by contemporary means of composing technique. One should take note of the unique twelve-note system elaborated by the composer, a characteristic time organisation based on contrasting the conducted sections against the ad libitum ones, and finally the vast repertoire of sound articulation allowing for unusual differentiation of the timbre. Three Scenes for Percussion and Six Instruments (2009) by Per Norgard. Preface / Program Note: The perpetrator soloist is the continuous figure and protagonist in the three scenes of the music. The term scene can be understood as ambiguous, both as the physical place, the platform where you perform and play music and drama - and as the term of narrative course and section in a dramatic performance. My musical scenes unfold in three different stage performances and ensembles. The first stage is characterized by discrete and melodic instruments, vibraphone and marimba, with counterplay from the three riders. In the second stage, the spotlight is on the butcher soloist alone; we meet the protagonist / soloist in a monologue, performed mainly on singing saw, which is intended to treat the utmost microton precision. We also hear the soloist playing at Kalimba, also a popular instrument, but now with African background - unlike the domestic courthouse's musical saw - an often-heard soundtrack from the childhood comrade at Norrebro. In the third stage there is a fan trio, which initially plays up to the impactor's various powerful drums. After a drum cadence, all seven music ends together for the first time. The work ends with a short sleigh solo.

Billy Bennett (1887-1942) was a British comedian who specialised in comic monologues. He was born into the music hall industry and, after a decorated spell in the Army during the First World War, he began his own successful stage career in 1919. Often billed as Almost a Gentleman, he shot to fame at the 1926 Royal Command Performance (now the Royal Variety Shows), and remained a popular public figure for over a decade.

Here, appearing for the first time, is the piano vocal score of Le Willis, Giacomo Puccinis first stage work, whose full score remained unpublished until 2020, when it was issued by Casa Ricordi (NR 139546).The critical edition by Martin Deasy is based, as far as the first six Numbers are concerned, on the autograph score that Puccini reutilized for composing Le Villi. The autograph pages incorporating the final Number - pages that were later removed, in order to make space for the new material produced for Le Villi- are also proposed as the principal text.Pursuing an innovative philological approach, the editor has, furthermore, taken intodue consideration the contemporaneous printed editions of the piano vocal score, on the assumption that they constitute the principal collateral sources, if one considers the particular genesis of this work. For it is certain that Puccini, upon entering the Sonzogno competition, submitted a score of Willis that lacked proper orchestration in a few pages and displayed, above all, incomplete vocal lines. However, he also provided a manuscript reduction for piano and vocal score (now lost, except for the final Number of Willis) that was undoubtedly more detailed, as far as the vocal lines were concerned. The editor proves that the vocal material produced for the first performance of Willis was not copied from the autograph score, but from the lost score reduction. The latter also served as the basis for the preparation of Ricordi's printed edition of the piano vocal score.

The quest for new forms of expression thus becomes a defining feature in modernist art. Composers, riding the wave of momentum built first in literature and the fine arts, blurred the boundaries between high and low styles, and it is in this co-existence, inherent to the new forms, that musical production found new life. Theatre studies have pinpointed this desire for artistic experimentation with Paris at its centre, the city of light, that cultural meeting ground and formidable catalyst of artistic trends. The visual spectacle produced during the forty years (approximately 1890-1930) covered in this volume has therefore been analysed in a number of different ways, deriving from the vast panorama of cultural history, interrogating theatrical materials not only from the standpoint of the <>, but also by investigating the links between high and low, mediatised culture. Musicological research applied to high art genres (song, opera, all genres of instrumental music) does not yet seem to have taken these hybrid spectacles which modify forms and genres in search of new musical and dramatic solutions into consideration, except in a few rare cases. On the other hand, new impetus has been given by a renewed interest in popular chanson and ballet. In this current volume, we have chosen to interrogate the spectacular element, that is to say the performance, as 'a text', equal in status to the music and the literary text. Therefore, the different subject areas proposed in the following chapters reveal a lesser importance of the subject material set to music by composers but a greater willingness, at the centre of this aesthetic renewal, to try out new musical forms or to adapt traditional structures to new dramatic ends.
