Jyrki Linjama's second string quartet (2018) is subtitled Allerheiligentag III. The material for the Allerheiligentag cycle is a Finnish folk chorale for All Saints' Day (no. 146 in the Finnish Hymn Book). The first work in the cycle is a string trio (2007), the second a piece for orchestra (2009), and the fourth and fifth are solo works for viola da gamba and violin.The composer tells: The choice of topic and material for the string trio was originally prompted by the venue at which it was to be premiered: the old church on the island of Seili (Sjalo). The bleak history of the island's leper and mental hospital evoked images of suffering and death. I got so attached to the harsh and beautiful melody that it began to generate a whole cycle. The string quartet is in three movements (slow-quick-slow) tensed in different ways by contrasts. The first movement has both swinging softness and cutting sharpness, the Scherzo the wildness of a dance of death and lyricism, and the finale the irrevocability of a funeral march and tender melodiousness.

The source of the present edition of the Oboe Concerto in A minor by Antonio Vivaldi is the Collected Works of Vivaldi, edited by Malipiero, published by Ricordi 1955. The title of the original score is Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo the original setting: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi and Cembalo. The arrangement for oboe and piano is kept in accurate conformity with the musical text of score, the continuo part - however - has been more freely adapted (of course within the possibilities of baroque style). The piano part contains the entire orchestral material in the Tutti-s, thus the soloist is not obliged to play all the Tutti parts.However, in Movement I and III the first and last Tutti may never be omitted by the performer. Die Grundlage dieser Ausgabe des Oboenkonzertes in A-Moll von Antonio Vivaldi ist die von Malipiero redigierte Gesamtausgabe (Ricordi, 1955). Der Titel der Originalpartitur lautet: Concerto in La minore per oboe, archi e cembalo: die Besetzung ist folgende: Oboe, Violini I-II, Viole, Violoncelli, Contrabassi, Cembalo. Die Ausgabe für Oboe und Klavier ist dem Urtext der Partitur getreu, doch ist die Ausarbeitung des Continuos etwas freier behandelt (natürlich nur im Rahmen der vom Stil der Barockmusik gebotenen Möglichkeit). Die Klavierstimme enthält an den Tuttistellen das Stimmaterial des ganzen Orchesters: der Solist ist daher nicht verpflichtet, sämtliche Tuttimitzuspielen. (Im I. und III. Albert Robert Mueller (Muller) was a German trombonist born in 1849. He initially received violin lessons and discovered his talent for trombone playing at the age of twelve. He eventually settled in Leipzig and became a member of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra as well as a teacher at the Royal Conservatory of Music. He wrote the School for Trombone in 1902. (Wikipedia) The School for Trombone (part of our Vintage Brass Series, not to be confused with the Technical Etudes) is a very detailed and comprehensive book in three volumes totalling 208 pages, the text being divided into German, English and Russian languages. * Volume I includes detailed lessons on music theory including all scales and keys, rhythm, time signatures, rests, accents, accidentals, explanations of tempo markings, dynamics, posture, tone, a table of positions and notes. The lessons go through different keys starting very slowly and methodically with short exercises....not going too fast for the beginning student. Along the way Mueller inserts easy duets to perform with teacher and student, including many Bach chorales, etc. to get tuning and tone solidified. * Volume II for the intermediate level student, begins with the first studies of slurs and legato. He introduces simple songs and famous melodies including more duets. The exercises get progressively more difficult and include the entire collection of ornaments. * Volume III, for the more advanced student, introduces tenor and alto clefs in scales and studies including more duets. The new editions put the music text of Johann Nepomuk David's edition of the parts to the test, especially the editor's practical arrangement, which reflected the performance style of his time. These new editions go one step further, also in a performance-practical sense. The publication of the score and (orchestral) parts also enables string orchestras to play this piece for the first time - an instrumental possibility that is perfectly legitimate, both musically and historically.
