In a letter dating from 1777 Mozart reported to his father from Mannheim that Johann Baptist Wendling principal Flautist of the famous Mannheim Orchestra had been approached by a wealthy Dutch businessman by the name of De Jean who was prepared to pay 200 gulden for three easy flute concertos and four flute quartets for his own use. Mozart accepted the commission. By the day before the Dutchman left Mozart had delivered only three of the quartets andtwo concertos for which he had been paid 964 gulden. The composer who was himself being pressed by his father to continue his own journey to Paris with his mother was full of excuses writing back to Salzburg on 14 February 'It is not surprising I have been unable to finish them for I never have a single hour's quiet here...Moreover you know I become quite powerless when I am obliged to write for an instrument I can't stand.' There is more than a hint of disingenuousness in Mozart's words for this was the height of the period during which he was being distracted from his work by his new-found love for the Mannheim singer Aloysia Weber. (He ultimatelymarried her sister Constanze.) If Mozart's dislike of the Flute was as great as he claimed there are few signs in the Flute Concerto No.1 in G major particularly in the expressive central Adagio ma non troppo. The outermovements are an Allegro maestoso and a concluding Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto. The work is scored for two oboes (replaced by flutes in the Adagio) two horns and strings. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's (1756-1791) Flute Concerto in D is an adaptation of the original Oboe Concerto in C which the composer reworked in 1778. The Concerto remains widely studied and performed on both instruments making it one of the more important Concerti in the woodwind repertoire. Concerto in D is in three movements; 1. Allegro aperto 2. Adagio non troppo and 3. Rondo: Allegretto. The first and last movements are in the tonic key whilst the second movement is in the subdominant key of G major. A Dutch flautist of the time Ferdinand de Jean commissioned Mozartfor four Flute quartets and three Flute concerti. However the composer who famously disliked the Flute only completed three quartets and one concerto. Instead of composing a second concerto Mozart rearranged his Oboe Concerto with substantial changes for it to fit with the Flute. De Jean did not approve yet the Concerto in D for Flute remains as popular to this day as the Concerto in C for Oboe.

This piece was originally written for Violin and Piano and if the 'New World' Symphony and the 'American' String Quartet are the best-known products of Anton n Dvorak's years in the United States the little Sonatina in G major(sometimes called the 'Indian Lament' Sonatina) may well be the most obscure; yet it is a charming work that deserves better than its relegation to the learning books of young violinists. The Sonatina is in four movements:Allegro risoluto Larghetto Scherzo (molto vivace) and Allegro. The first movement's principal tune has a firm rhythmic spine its second tune a gentle plaintiveness; there is just a hint of Americanfolk music in the movement.The following Larghetto earned the Sonatina its nickname. The succession of its three melodies - one in G minor one in B flat major and one in G major - has to it the same wistfulness and thesame sudden brightening and then softening of mood that we hear in the famous slow movement of the 'New World' Symphony.The Scherzo takes the very first gesture of the Allegro risoluto as its starting-point. The finale isa substantial sonata-allegro movement with three wonderful themes: the opening syncopated idea in G major a subsidiary thought in E minor very dancelike and built around a repeating marcato cell and finally a rich tranquillomelody that closes the exposition. This adaptation for Flute and Piano by James Galway conveys all the spirit of the original.
