This three-movement work is adapted from my Woodwind Quintet No. 3 (2008), which was originally a four-movement piano duet (2007) and a symphonic wind ensemble work (2007), arranged here for a saxophone ensemble, for premiere at the 18th World Saxophone Congress held in July 2018 in Zagreb, Croatia. The authentic folk music from China West has amazed and inspired me in the creation of this work, which has the folk music elements drawn from the folk songs Du Mu and Amaliehuo of the Zang People; Ashima of the Yi People; as well as Dou Duo and the Lusheng ensemble music of the Miao People. It's written for soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, and bass saxophones with possible multiple players for all parts. This work was commissioned by the Phoenix Concerts of New York State Council. I clarified that I tend to provide sensation, instead of telling a story under the frame of the Folk Tale Project. It's the sensation of a traveller, stranger, geographical, temporal or cultural, while he/she reaches a new spot just with his/her memories, knowledges and songs. The work Five Folk Songs is about exploration and integration. Folk song is just like the goblet. Every time it is refilled, the fragrance of wine is different. From the goblet she drinks Muscat. Happy or sad in her heart fulfilled? It is also variant. The Five Folk Songs could be listened to paradigmatically. You may notice that essentially the Folk Songs are like the wine bottles, Bartok, Brahms, Berio..., composers pour their thinking and consciousness into. (SHEN Ye)World premiere: New York City, Church of St. Matthew & St. Timothy, December 9, 2011.

Charles Camilleri (1931 - 2009) was a Maltese composer. As a teenager, he composed a number of works based on folk music and legends of his native Malta. He moved from his early influences by Maltese folk music to a musical form in which nothing is fixed and his compositions evolve from themselves with a sense of fluency and inevitability. He composed over 100 works for orchestra, chamber ensemble, voice and solo instruments. Camilleri's work has been performed throughout the world and his research of folk music and improvisation, the influences of the sounds of Africa and Asia, together with the academic study of European music, helped him create a universal style. Camilleri is recognized in Malta as one of the major composers of his generation. He died on 3 January 2009 at the age of 77. His funeral took place two days later at Naxxar, his long-time town of residence. Flags across Malta were flown at half-mast in tribute to him. Just like Bach's 6 suites for cello solo, these 6 arabesques are composed of a number of distinct movements which follow the suite principle. The melodies in these 6 arabesques are influenced by Mediterranean folk music.

The 4 Greek Songs were composed during the late fifties. The first and third movements capture the loose vocal style of the cantilena which is characteristic for the mediterranean region. The second and fourth movements are based on original dances which are typical for the modal nature of Greek music.

Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the “École de Parisâ€. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the “Association of Young Polish Musiciansâ€, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de'lÂ’Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore – homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak's enchanting drama music. The premiere recording of the suites with Holger Groschopp and Adele Bitter was awarded the Opus Klassik 2023 in the category Editorial Achievement of the Year.
