For Teresa was commissioned by Tim Suter for his wife, Helen, as part of William Howard’s Love Songs Project and was first performed privately by William Howard for her 60th birthday in February 2017. He gave the public premiere at Hoxton Hall, London on 26th April 2017. The music is based on the notes T E S (E flat) A of the Christian name of the composer’s wife, Teresa Cahill. The music works towards a quotation of the opening of Beethoven’s Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor, Für Elise (which also uses letters from the name Therese, H being B natural in German nomenclature), a piece which, it is now thought, was originallytitled Für Therese and possibly composed for Theresa Malfatti, to whom Beethoven unsuccessfully proposed marriage in 1810, but recent musicology has suggested other possible dedicatees.

The short two-part composition refers to two persons by the name of Teresa. One of them was a beautiful Polish actress, the other the favourite model of the painter Balthus. I tried to fuse the characteristics of both female persons with each other in the merging parts. The three-line D produced by rubbing a wine glass sounds like a faraway, almost inaudible planet tone that ends with a brief sigh. Wilfried Hiller.

Mother Teresa was happy to surprise her interlocutors by handing them a small card instead of a traditional business card, on which a short text was to be read, beginning with the line “The fruit of silence is prayer.†In 2013, Peteris Vasks set this peace prayer of Mother Teresa on behalf of the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival for mixed choir a cappella in the form of a dense elegiac sound stream. The versions for piano quintet and string quartet now make this musical expression of Mother Teresa's words accessible to two traditional genres of chamber music without the help of a choir.

Mother Teresa liked to surprise people she met by giving them a small card printed with five concise sentences instead of a calling card. The brief text on the card beginning with the line “The fruit of silence is prayer†was a summary of her vision of devout, peace-promoting philanthropy in poetical form. In 2013, I created a musical setting of Mother Teresa's “Prayer of Peace†which was commissioned by the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival for mixed choir a cappella (C 55851) in the form of a densely woven elegiac sound stream. Slightly later, I extended the work to produce a version with piano (C 56345) which in turn became the basis for a setting scored for mixed choir with string orchestra which was first performed in Riga in October 2014. In 2015, the versions for piano quintet (ED 22450) and string quartet (ED 22723) also permitted my musical setting of Mother Teresa's words to be performed without choir in two traditional genres of chamber music. The current published version for mixed choir and organ extends the work series through a further conventional scoring.

“We can do no great things, only small things with great love.†—Blessed Teresa of Calcutta With Great Love is a moving collection of songs that speak of God's love at work in us. These songs are fashioned for use throughout the liturgical year, enriching everything from the most intimate of prayer services to the most majestic of Christmas liturgies. The title track, “With Great Love,†is a beautiful message based on the writings of Blessed Teresa. It is a gentle call to action that is easily learned, enabling quick and active participation. Many of the tracks combine Latin with English lyrics. Moved by the simplicity and pure beauty of plainchant, de Silva weaves both languages seamlessly in a fusion of ageless text and contemporary melody, effectively preserving our traditions while presenting them in a modern, singable setting. Another notable inclusion, “God Will Lead Us Home,†contains a beautiful choral interlude on in paradisum that suspends the passing of time. There is a place in your library, your liturgies, and your hearts for every song in this collection. Contents: With Great Love • Enter God's Kingdom • Lord, Let Us See Your Kindness • Come, Lord Jesus • Magnificat • That Holy Night • There Is Room for the Stranger • Ubi Caritas • Sustained by Faith • Broken for the Broken • Litany of Thanksgiving • God Is Near • God Will Lead Us Home • Peace Blessing / Dona Nobis Pacem.

This reflective piece for choir uses the translation of a quote often attributed to Teresa of Ãvila, but more likely dating to the mid-19th century. The recurring theme in the text of Christ having “no body now but yours†does not diminish the presence of Christ in the Eucharist, but reinforces the belief that, by partaking of the Body of Christ, we become his body and so make him present to others through our action in the world. This gentle piece can also be sung as a solo piece, with unison choir, or even by the assembly once they have become familiar with it. Haunting and beautiful.
