Charles Aznavour, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in 1924, in Paris. He finally launched his singing career in France with great effort; despite his lack of star looks and less than remarkable voice. However, he had two things going for him:powerful on-stage charisma and great willpower. It took him about twenty years to reach the top but when he did, his determination certainly paid off. He became a star singer/songwriter in France and his chansons were embraced throughout the rest ofthe world as well. The typical French atmosphere that pervades his music can be clearly experienced in this medley for concert band. The third piece from Liszt's Grandes Études de Paganini presents an especially formidable technical challenge to performers. Based on the finale movement of Paganini's Violin Concerto in B minor, La campanella was dedicated to Clara Schumann. Liszt first had the opportunity to witness the famous violin virtuoso's playing at a concert in Paris in 1832, and it inspired the young Liszt to obsessively pursue his own music through practice and intensive study of literature and arts. As a result, Liszt composed his six transcendent études that made up the piano cycle Études d'exécution transcendante d'aprés Paganini for a time, Liszt himself was the only one capable ofperforming them. She has performed with the Chicago Symphony and served on the faculties of the University of Washington and Pacific Lutheran University. I looked and asked around, and my colleague Joanna Bassett recommended the Telemann Concerto in E Minor for Traverso and Recorder. I didn’t know the piece, but as I listened to a recording of it, I immediately loved it and could easily envision how beautifully it could work, with a few “adjustments,†for flute and piccolo. I got to work, and the current publication is the result. I have performed it many times, and enjoy it even more every time. It fits a unique place in our repertoire, and works equally well with piano as with the string orchestra setting.According to Steven D. Zohn, pre-eminent Telemann scholar, and author of Music for a Mixed Taste: Style, Genre, and Meaning in Telemann’s Instrumental Works, much is unknown about the concerto itself; it likely dates from the 1720s, soon after Telemann moved to Hamburg. Only an eighteenth-century copyist’s set of parts is extant, that of Johann Samuel Endler, who was engaged at the Darmstadt court as a singer and violinist, later becoming Vice-Kapellmeister and Kapellmeister, and who had a large collection of Telemann’s works.As in my Vivaldi concertos edition (Presser 414-41190), I have added virtually all of the articulations and dynamics that appear here, and have inserted quite a bit of ornamentation. Drawing on his years of experience with the United States Air Force Band, Colonel Gabriel has meticulously edited this formidable march for the modern band. Rolling Thunder has long been an admired and often performed work in the symphonic band repertoire. Composed by (James) Henry Fillmore in 1916, this march was a favorite of conductor Merle Evans and the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. The work is dedicated to Ed Hicker, who as far as the little documentation shows, was an actor and musician in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and who may have performed with Fillmore in the many pit orchestra engagements of his youth. Rolling Thunder is unique within the march oeuvre, in that its softest dynamic marking is forte! In later printings, Fillmore added the subtitle A Trombone Ace, perhaps a tip of the hat to his own instrument and that the trombones and other bass instruments are playing to the fore from beginning to end. Fillmore also indicates that the march should be played Furioso. So sit back, close your eyes and enjoy the exciting, death defying sounds of the circus as only Henry Fillmore (our Uncle Henry) can do.

Peter Benoit, one of the great Flemish Romantic composers and often considered the origin of the Flemish School, was better known for his piano and choral music than for his wind music. Nevertheless, his one entry into the flute repertoire - the Concerto - is an exemplary piece of high Romanticism that combines symphonic writing with idiomatic, virtuosic flute technique. Composed as part of a ‘legendary triptych’ - the Stories and Ballads for Piano, the Symphonic Tale for Piano and orchestra, and the Flute Concerto - the three movements show the Concerto for the tone poem it is at heart. The first Preludium (Will-o’-the-Wisps) begins with a fiery orchestral fanfare, with an equally grand entrance by the soloist that introduces the first theme and launches the movement into the formidable back-and-forth between soloist and orchestral forces. The second, Melancholia, somewhat resembles the Molique Andante in its construction - a clear, wistful theme is embellished and carefully expanded into a full musical showpiece for flute. The Finale (Dance of the Wisps) then immediately launches into a display of the flutist’s agility, moving through various permutations of the theme before coming to an exuberant, grateful landing.
