This dramatic and moving cantata for Lent, Holy Week or Easter is comprised of eight choral pieces, each corresponding to the eight days in the life of Christ from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday. Audra Parker's narration, easily performed by two people, summarizes the events of this final week. Mark Hayes's melodies and harmonies cover a full spectrum of color, dynamics and emotion. John Parker's lyrics are filled with pathos and joy, helping choir and congregation alike experience the passion story in a profound new way. Forsaken may be performed in concert style with piano, accompaniment CD or full orchestra. Performance time: approximately 35 minutes.

Boldly triumphant, this Easter anthem features new music and text by two of this century’s premier church writers. It opens with brilliant figures in the accompaniment and a majestic choral acclamation. The second verse is more reflective, recalling the crucifixion. The tempo quickens as the fanfare returns, heralding the entrance of Beethoven’s beloved Ode to Joy. Shifting again in tempo and in key, the final verse resounds with victorious grandeur and rising alleluias. (From the cantata Forsaken. SATB – 55/1112L; SAB – 55/1113L.).

Ferguson's love of chant inspires much of his writing in this Evening Service. He offers here a setting of the Phos Hillaron (O Gracious Light), Psalm 111 (Confitebor Tibi), and the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Each movement is voiced according to Ferguson's interpretation of the text: Unison treble chorus for the Phos hilaron, SATB for the Psalm and Magnificat and TTBB for the Nunc Dimittis; all accompanied by organ, revealing the heritage of the French style of chant accompaniment as well as the time-honored tradition of Anglican psalmody and singing of the evening canticles. The Nunc Dimittis also has optional parts for three violoncelli.
